Born on December 13, 1946 in Longview, Texas to Elizabeth and Joe Ferguson, Jane spent most of her formative years in Temple where she graduated from Temple High School. Jane received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Texas in 1968. She then earned her Masters Degree in Special Education from the University of Houston.
Jane's professional calling and passion was children's education. She served as a kindergarten teacher for many years at Good Shepherd Episcopal School in Austin. In 1990, Jane took a position as Head of School for St. Matthew's Episcopal Day School, where she served for almost a decade. Her proudest professional achievement was serving as a co-founder and Head of School for Trinity Episcopal School in Austin. She also served as a member of the Board of Directors for St. James' Episcopal School.
Jane and her husband Tom met in Temple, Texas when she was 14 years old. On the road of life, Jane was the driver, and Tom was her eager passenger and companion. They married in 1967 and shared 47 wonderful years together. Their loving marriage serves as a legacy and example that her family will cherish.
Known as Sassy by her four grandkids, she treasured spending time with each of them, and made every one of them feel loved and special. She more than anyone else brought her family together, and her Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations and dinner parties will remain some of the family's happiest and most special memories. She was always the leader of the fun, and is credited with introducing each of her grandkids to Oreos on summer trips to Crested Butte.
Sassy taught her family so many things. She inherited from her father the ability to find joy in simple pleasures, and her love for life taught her family how to find happiness in the moment and make every day a celebration. Through her faithful love of others she taught her family how to be better friends. Despite her professional success, her family came first and each one of them knew and felt it.
Jane is survived by her husband Tom Hill; by her daughter Jennifer Morgan and husband Todd, of Austin; by her son Andrew Hill and wife Heidi of Dallas; by her four precious grandchildren, Hill and Drew Morgan, of Austin, and Libby and Charlie Hill, of Dallas; and by her brother Wallace Ferguson and wife Suzanne, of Boerne. She was preceded in death by her sister Mary Ann Ferguson of Temple.
A memorial service in celebration of Jane's life will be held at St. David's Episcopal Church, 301 East 8th Street, Austin, TX on Tuesday, October 14 2014 at 6:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Jane Ferguson Hill Endowment, c/o Trinity Episcopal School, 3901 Bee Caves Road, Austin, TX 78746 (www.austintrinity.org); or to Power for Parkinson's (http://www.powerforparkinsons.org/donatevolunteer.html).
Jane's entire family would like to thank her husband Tom for his incredible dedication and care these last five years. Despite her extended illness, Jane spent not one night in the hospital during this time, due in large part to Tom's expert and loving care. They would also like to thank Jane's cousin Margaret Ruff for her love, friendship and support, as well as the wonderful caregivers at Hospice Austin.
