
As the announcement just went out today by UT for 'UT Remembers' the passing of those faculty and colleagues during this past year (on Friday May 6th at 2:00 pm), I scanned the list and just learned of Jean's passing.  

In my association with Jean for about 15 years it was clear in that association that there was not a mean bone in her body.  She was one of the sweetest, most gracious individuals I have met.   One word signifies Jean and that is Grace.  

She learned that my husband could fix almost anything so she and her husband, George, called on him to repair a beautiful Victorian bed that was in their home.  From that connection, my husband developed a friendship with both Jean and George and also recognized her grace.  

I am a bit overwhelmed that I just learned of her passing today but am pleased that I can still share herein my memories of Jean.

My Sympathy goes to you and family on the passing of your mother.  

I remember her at several of our HEHC meetings, most recently at your home last spring and at the Botanical Gardens.  She seemed to enjoy people.    I am sure you have many fond memories of her so keep those in your heart always.



cindy and family , so sorry to hear your mom has passed on.  but you must hav many fond memories of her , having had her with you for so long.  i can remember meeting her the first time  and she was such a sophisticated lady.  i always said she was an inspiration to me as a home economics teacher.  my sympathies to you all



What a shock to today when I learned of Jean's passing.  In her, the Lord created a gentle caring lady and His light brightly shone through her.  Her sweet smile and kindness given to all was a blessing that keeps giving as that's how I always remember her.  She was compassionate, perceptive and had integrity that was without question.  

I was not at UT at the time she was teaching, but I got to know her later as a colleague and friend and as a mentor both professionally and personally.  I greatly respected and loved her.



How lucky am I to have known Jean Sutherland!  She was a mentor and example of a teacher and a Texas Woman.  Several years ago I received a grant to create a "Women of Texas Paper Dolls" web page where we would honor exemplary women of Texas with monthly paper dolls to be used by teachers.  The grant sponsor asked who would be the first and I did not hesitate:  "Jean Sutherland!"  It seemed apparent to me that when we look to the women of Texas who built this state, teachers must be the first honored.  Jean, to me, was the obvious person to stand for all of them.  She was very excited about this project and when, after many delays, the site went live, my sister and I took supper over and together, we helped Jean navigate to her own web page.  Upon arrival, she excitedly proclaimed, "I am on the World Wide Web!"  I never see the "www" prefix without thinking of Jean!  I have missed her daily since her retirement, but always looked so forward to seeing her sparkling smile at the many Human Ecology events she attended.  They will not be the same without her, but we and all of her students will fell her there.  I know her family members are so proud of her!



Jean was gracious, kind, compassionate, observant, diplomatic, and always present with you. She  was a high example of character and loving family member. I respect and love her, always.



Mrs. Sutherland was a loving and caring person. She loved her family very dearly. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family in this time of grief.



I had the great privilege of working with Mrs. Sutherland at the School of Human Ecology (originally Home Economics) when she was on the faculty teaching in the Textiles and Apparel area.  She was always pleasant, charming and smiling â€“ a true lady in every sense of the word.  At one point, I interviewed her at her home for a profile in the Human Ecology Newsletter as she was also an alumna of our School.  She was a perfect and gracious hostess, serving me iced tea and pulling out her scrap books from her days as a student in Home Economics.  We spent a lovely afternoon going over her undergraduate memories.

Her good breeding, her strong belief in the importance of a university education her desire to be of service to the University were among the many things that stood out in her teaching, her working with students, and her dealings with faculty and staff.  She was a lady of great character, tremendous charm and warmth.
One of the projects dearest to her heart was providing a Student Lounge in the Gearing Buildingâ€”it became a haven for harried and sleep-deprived students, a sanctuary where generations of students could have a place to relax, do homework, cram for an exam or just sit down and eat lunch in peace.  Once, at her own expense, she had gotten some furniture reupholstered and I helped her bring in cushions and pillows for the chairs and sofas.  I said, â€œMrs. Sutherland, I bet we could get you reimbursed for all this.â€  She said to me, â€œOh, Mike.  Itâ€™s too much trouble and besides, the kids need it.â€

She was such a wonderful person.  One I will always remember with tremendous affection.
  




You have our deepest sympathies.  Jean was a great friend and a wonderful neighbor.  She will be missed.



Jean was a most beautiful lady , in body and in soul.  The world has lost a wonderful citizen.  Jean will be most missed by all who knew her.  She was loved.



The passing of my Aunt Jean leaves an empty space not only for me but everyone she touched in her life.  She represented a generation that will never be replicated.  Honest, hard working, good samaritans to all that crossed their path.  Her service on this earth is now complete and she has moved on to the glory that she so richly deserves.  I will miss her terribly; her hugs, her wisdom, her nurturing ways but most of all her fearless desire for life and all that it brings.  



Aunt Jean was a tower of strength, love and hope. No matter the distance, the trouble or the joy, she was always present with you when needed. Her goodness always shown through. I already miss her terribly.



I worked along side Jean for more than 20 years at UT Home Economics.  She was always a ray of sunshine and was the one you could always count on for anything you needed.  She was the historian and keeper of all good thoughts and deeds.  The halls of Gearing were never the same after her retirement, although she never retired from her students and colleagues.  She was a teacher of inspiration to all of us.   We will miss her.



My aunt Jean was the ultimate Peacemaker.  She had wit and a good heart;  she always wanted the best for everybody.  She was an example for our family of goodness and love.  We will miss her loving presence.



I loved Jean, she was such a dear dear person.  I enjoyed being with she and George and then with Jean.  The last time I got to see her was at the "gathering" that Becky had for Chuck.  She looked wonderful and I am so very grateful for having the oppertunity to see before she went to rest with Our Lord.

My aunt Jean lived her exemplary life by the Golden Rule. She was always very intelligent and compassionate, just and fair toward everyone. Anyone who knew her was lucky. She will always be an example to me of one of the most loving, good persons I have ever known.
