

Jean Sutherland was an embodiment of God’s love on this earth and shared it with all whose lives crossed her path. She was born January 18, 1923 in Austin and passed from this earthly realm on September 15, 2010.
Jean graduated from Austin High School in 1940, from the University of Texas with a BS in 1944 and an MS in 1957. She was an educator almost all her working life, inspiring many students. Jean first taught preschool in Austin then in 1957 began teaching junior and senior high school Home Economics for 23 years. Jean and George returned to Austin in 1980, joined the UT Department of Home Economics, now called the School of Human Ecology and taught there for 22 years. Jean was a founding member of the VHETAT now Family and Consumer Science Teachers of Texas and received an award for teaching 45 years in the Home Economics field, was elected to Delta Kappa Gamma teaching honor fraternity and selected the Dept of Human Ecology Alumni of the Year.
Jean’s beauty shown in her community and social activities which included Orange Jackets, The Settlement Home, UT Retired Faculty, University Ladies Club, multiple dance clubs, and many other activities. We will truly miss her Christian example of love, dedication, selflessness and encouragement.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Minnie Taber, beloved husband of 57 years George and 8 Taber siblings.
Jean is survived by her 3 children and their spouses: George and DiAnn Sutherland, Jr, Cynthia and Paul Gust, Karen and Bruce Rohe; 6 grandchildren: Laura S. Giesler, J. Merritt Myers, Jordan R. Myers, Kenneth C. Rohe, Vanessa J. Barbour, John D. Rohe and 3 great-grandchildren: Anna, Jacob and William Giesler.
An internment ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 20, 2010 at Austin Memorial Cemetery. A memorial celebration service at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday with The Rev. Kelly Koonce officiating. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
