Jeannette Harriet Devorak Smith passed away on December 6, 2017. Jeanette was born October 4, 1920 in Canby, Minnesota, to Joseph and Hilda Devorak. She lived in Fergus Falls and St. Paul, Minnesota, where she began her nursing career at Anchor Hospital in 1943. After moving to the Bay area of California, she joined the US Navy as a nurse in 1944. She transferred to the Naval station at China Lake, California in 1945. There, in 1946, she met Navy pilot Herb Smith. They were married that same year, and following Herb's graduation from the University of Texas, the couple lived in St. Paul; Des Plaines, Illinois; and Dallas and Austin, Texas.
Jeannette left nursing, started a family and helped her husband build a successful business. She loved golf, participated in three bridge clubs and enjoyed entertaining. But most of all, she was a devoted wife to Herb for more than 71 years, a loving mother to her two children and their children and grandchildren. She didn't have an enemy in the world.
Jeannette was preceded in death by her husband Herb, who passed away just 6 weeks earlier, by her parents, her two sisters Hyldred "Dolly" McBride and Blanch Landsberger and brothers Reynold and Joseph "Buddy" Devorak. She is survived by her son Jeff (Jaelene) and granddaughter Natasha; and by her daughter Sandy Torenko (Bill), granddaughter Kimberly Hayes (Gerard), and great grandchildren Owen and Colin Hayes; as well as by the many friends Herb and Jeanette made in the Querencia community. The family thanks the wonderful staff at the Querencia for their support in her final years.
