My heart hurts just finding out about the death of Mr.Porras he was one of my favorite teachers that I admired loved and respected dearly. Mr.Porras was my 2nd grade teacher at Palm Elementary and I learned so much from that man and am very blessed to have had him in my life just for that short period of time. Thank you all so very much. My dad was in many ways my hero and my biggest supporter- I am touched and comforted beyond words that so many other people felt the same way about him. I know I speak for both, my mom and myself, in saying the outpouring of love and support we have seen has meant the world to both of us. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Porras at Hemhpill Elementary from 2002 to 2005.  I am an itinerant staff member in the district and was always humbled that he cared enough to always ask how my own children were doing and even remembered them by name.  I had the pleasure of speaking to him just two weeks ago about some of our shared students and that's exactly how he started the conversation "How are you? How are your boys? And your daughter?"  He was a gentle soul with an endless amount of love and compassion for those he worked with.  He will truly be missed by those that knew him.

Dr.porras was a great assistant principal and I like his one finger wave,and his great smile. I will miss him.(4th grade student)

Dearest Leah, 
You were the first person I thought of when I awoke this morning.  Thank you for sharing your daddy with us.  I was reflecting on all the voices I read last night saying, "Jesse, you were like a second father to me," and I know that holds true for me, as well.  
The day I introduced myself, when he first arrived at Hemphill, the warmest glow of pride crept over his entire countenance.  He explained he had a daughter named Leah and told me some about what you were doing in life at the time.
The thing about your daddy is that he had a mansion of rooms for people inside his heart, and he was constantly remodeling to invite in more.  He WAS like a second father to so many, myself included.  He was among the first I confided in about expecting my Jacob.  He was the one to whom I ran to talk about my students, but also my life in general.  He was the one to whom my husband turned, when he needed advice about certain choices.  Having no earthly dad myself, he was one of those rare souls who "adopted" me (and SO MANY OTHERS) into that heart-mansion.
So, to you, Leah, I offer my deepest, sincerest gratitude for sharing your daddy with us.  In doing so, you reveal that you not only have Jesse's heart, but a heart like Christ's own.
My love and my prayers are with you, as you try to make sense of this most injuring loss,

     There are not enough words in the universe, nor letters in cyberspace, to contain all the love, admiration, warmth and respect we ALL hold for you.
This past Thursday morning, Jarrett and I were preparing for work, and talking about a couple of the greatest men we both know.  We both agreed that if you were to ever become a principal of your own campus, we would whole-heartedly seek to work there with you.  I don't think there is a school building large enough to house all the teachers and students who would flock to be under your wings.
     Thank you for all the hugs, smiles, and "ganas" you have shared with each one of our hearts.  Thank you for each conversation and moment of care.  Thank you for the example of "fatherhood" you have been over the years.
     Although God has called you Home, the results of your work here on earth will not end for decades to come.

I AM THE GRANDFATHER OF FORMER STUDENTS MIKAYLA AND ALICIA CRUZ.  I REMEMBER MANY OCCASIONS WHEN I VISITED THE SCHOOL. DR. PORRAS WAS ALWAYS EXTREMELY FRIENDLY, SINCERE AND RESPECTFUL IN HIS GREETINGS, GENUINELY CARING FOR HIS STUDENTS, ALWAYS MOVING QUICKLY FROM ONE POINT TO ANOTHER, SEEMINGLY EVERYWHERE.  I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN NOT FINDING OUT EARLIER OF HIS POOR HEALTH AND DEMISE.  I WILL ALWAYS DEEPLY REGRET MISSING HIS SERVICE BUT WILL NEVER FORGET HIM AND HIS LIFE AT HEMPHILL ELEMENTARY.  HE WAS THE LIVING EPITOME OF THE DEDICATED EDUCATOR.  HE SHOULD SERVE AS A ROLE MODEL FOR FUTURE TEACHERS/ADMISTRATORS.

My fondest memories are from Jesse's G.C. Murphy days in the early 70's, when he worked with my mother, Katherine (Kathy) Richter.  He was energetic, funny, and genuine- making a lasting impression on me as a youngster.  I was delighted to find him a part of my Hays CISD team much later.  His life was a gift to many of us.  May God bless his family with the comfort of His loving arms as they grieve and may they be comforted by the knowledge of how much he was loved.  No one is ready to say goodbye- please be gentle and patient with yourselves during this tough time.

As a school bus driver there was always comfort knowing no matter how early in the morning or how long after school had been let out if you called Hemphill Mr Porras voice would come on the handheld radio to assist you.    One of my fond memories of him is one morning he was out in the parking lot greeting buses as they came in , in the pouring rain. I took him an umbrella. He said " Aww how sweet of you (with his big smile) but no thank you. It'll just get in my way" as he hurried of to where ever he was needed.       I always felt his trust to transport some of Hemphill's very special students. If I ever needed his assistance I could always call on him. We had developed our own humorous radio shout out. "Mr. Porras you got your ears on, Mr Porras. This is bus.." "Yes Mrs Arredondo they're on. Go ahead." He would use the same radio shout out to get my attention "Mrs. Arredondo, you got your ears on Mrs. Arredondo". With fond memories one last shout out "Mr Porras you got your ears on, Mr. Porras" Sir, you will greatly be missed. You will greatly be missed" Bye-Bye.

Dr. Jesse Porras will be missed dearly. He was an amazing teacher I remember the first day I walked into his classroom nervous as could be, it was my first day at Palm but he made me feel at ease right away. And would always make our class laugh. I will always remember his love for teaching and golf. My whole family got to know him he was my teacher and my sister and brother's Principal. Thanks for always believing in educating the youth. I would also like to give my regards to his family and thank them for sharing him with us.

Jesse, thank you so much for making all our efforts so much easier.  Every day the drivers and the staff looked forward to that time we would have together in the bus loading zone.  It was such an enjoyable experience, and you were our first and best example when training new drivers on how to make the student transfers work safely and efficiently.

We will miss you, and we will remember you.  I'll see you again, Amigo.  Save a place for me.

   The lasting gift that any loved one gives us is their presence in our hearts. The memories and the very spirit of Jesse will live on in us, and in the things we cherish and do, long after he is no longer physically here. That is something no one can ever take from us. 
  We can acknowledge that Jesse will always be with us, that in times when we are severely tested, when we are feeling week or particularly vulnerable, we can remember that he is with us in ways that are not visible. This presence can be a great source of comfort or sustenance, of strength or beauty. It is up to us to dedicate ourselves to integrating Jessie's loving spirit into our ongoing lives.

I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Dr. Porras passing. I will always remember his infectious smile and kind heart. No matter what was going on he was uplifting and energetic.On court dates I would pass Hemphill at 6:30 am and Dr. Porras was already there. I would think what drives this educator. It must be his love for the kids and staff he serves. Jesse, you were an excellent administrator,mentor,and friend.Your students and staff loved you and will miss you.

Dr. P, in my short time of knowing you the feelings I received were always positive.  You made me feel welcome and needed, you made me feel proud to be a part of HCISD. I will miss the way you greeted our PreK kiddos. "Boom Chicka Lacka Lacka." It always put a smile on everyones face. Your support meant so much.

Although it has been several years since I left Hemphill, you have remained a warm memory for me.  There are so many things that bring a smile to my face when I think back on them...Your bubbly smile (at all hours of the day), your famous wave, your genuine love of the Hemphill kids and families, and the support you consistently offered to your teachers.  You weren't afraid to invest in other's lives and for that I have always respected you greatly.  

May the Lord bless your family and hold them in peace through this heartbreaking time.  I will be out of town this weekend so I will not be able to attend the funeral but please know my prayers will be with the family on Saturday morning.

Once in an age we are touched by that special someone who sees in us, not the person that we are...but the angels we may be. Jesse was that someone. My heart goes out to the family at this time. Its a difficult to go forward with. Take comfort in knowing Jesse has filled the skys with his gracious heart and joyful spirit. He will forever be remembered for it and his contageous laughter. He always brought a smile to your face when you needed it most - God blessed us with Jesse's presence.

Dr P, You touched many lives. Most of "your" kids have graduated and still have a great love for you.  You leave us with heavy hearts but happy memories.

Jesse feels no pain any more.  Unfortunately for those of us left behind, we still feel the pain of loss.  He will remain very alive in our memories.

Dr. Porras was a man of true integrity and principle.  In my 32 career, I have yet to see an administrator to equal or come close to his love, zeal and great passion for the children and staff in our district, especially those of Hemphill Elementary.  Hemphill has lost a true warrior and champion.  Our prayer is that the Holy Spirit will bring great comfort to all the family, staff and students in your tremendous loss.  May his legacy live on thru each of you as you remember the joy and continue the fight for a better tomorrow.

As is clear from all of these wonderful thoughts, Jesse's SMILE and warm spirit will be hugely missed. His smile and warmth could always be counted on as a constant among the members of our extended district family.

Dr. Porras was so amazing when i was in elementary he always had a smile on his face and i remember at the end of the day when the buses would leave he would do his index finger wave and he was a great assistance vice principle and friend and he will be missed so much. My friend Jesse, you have gone on before us but we will see you again. You will be missed. Your school children will miss you and we will do our best to continue to give them the love and support you always gave them. We miss you already.

   A Man full of energy, intergrity, dedication, and a love for our school like no other!  
   Dr. Porras you were greatly loved by so many, and your enthusiasum and your smiling was so contageous! =) 
    Your work ethic was what most impressed me; you always worked so hard..you never would slow down and you always made me feel like I needed to keep up, work harder, do better! Thank You!
 A true mentor to so many, you were tough, but you loved! 
The Man that you were to us at HES: Father to some,  brother to others, beloved friend to us all!  I love you Dr. Porras.  Your presence in my office everyday will be something I'm going to really miss.
