
"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", the 4 watching Roberta Flack for her first time on telly, 1969. Silence afterward. No one wanted to say anything. We were embarrassed to say how much we felt. But not you. You turned to us with those big round intense eyes and said, "I was blown away by that." I miss you, Joe. Sorry we never looked each other up after the internet, even if to just say, Hello.

Sad news travels all too slowly, even on the Internet. So sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I was one of Joe's Grapevine companions in the early 70s. I'll always remember him as a friendly, kind and generous spirit, as well as one of the brightest minds and clearest writers I ever had the privilege to spend time with.



I am extraordinarily sorry and sad to hear of Joe's passing. The emptiness his passing has left in his sister Diana's heart can never be filled, but prayers for them both, and thoughts of love for Di may at least provide comfort.

With our up and down relationship, me, moving across the country, and you, staying put, we still managed to find each other--once it was 3 or 4 years--but we kept the flame burning for many of those years.  My heart is sad and lonely and I can only say to you, my dearest one, that maybe one day we might meet on some heavenly night. You left too soon, Joe; we were both ready to have our time together. You will live in my heart forever.



I met Joe, a senior majoring in Physics, when I was a freshman at UA Fayetteville. He had the coolest apartment, in the Marinoni apartments on Lafayette Street, ground floor. I had gone to the UARK to see 2001: A Space Odyssey. Somehow I met up with Joe, and meandered over to his pad, and talked through the night. That evening commenced a friendship of more than 40 years, and included The Incredible Camp Out at the Eureka Folk Festival in June 1973 where it Rained, baby. Back at Joe's after the Festival, CBS had a special "Duke Ellington, We Love you Madly." Ella, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughn, and Roberta Flack sang a quartet of "I Ain't Got Nothin But the Blues." Absolutely the best teevee  ever.
I edited The Grapevine in 72-73, and Joe succeeded me. He got me in real big trouble. I was away at law school, and the Vine decided to expose a sitting judge as a "slumlord." Pictures of bad bathrooms. The works.
Four years later, I had to try a capital murder case in front of that Judge!!! 



Well, Eb, you beat me to it. Wish we could have spent more time together these last few years. You were my mentor in college ('66-'68). You took me in and taught me all about the important things in life; such as playing cards and shooting pool and winning at it. You also made a friend for life. Remember all the times we had after school! The Bahamas, campouts in your Paragould backyard with me and my boys, Martini mixing school in my kitchen, and keeping up with your travels.  
Anyway, old buddy, I'll spend the rest of my life remembering our good times and praying for you and Diana.

So so sorry to hear about Joe.  He was such a good friend in high school.  Wish I could have seen and visited with him more recently.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Diane.  Paragould High School Class of 1964 will miss him.



Joe, it was great to have found you after many years of absence. I truly regret not having had more time to share. We have a special bond from our years at the Grapevine. I feel alone with those memories now. Somewhere you might smile that I'll close with "-30-".  Jim



Diane, I had not seen Joe in several years but I will always remember him and his wonderful personality.  He was always so nice.  He will be missed by many and I know he will always be remembered by everyone in our class.



Many years have passed since I was in high school with Joe, but I remember well his kind and sweet spirit.  I have thought of him many times through the years and hoped for his happiness.  My prayers and thoughts are with his family.



I have known Joe since we first met back in 1987 when we were both graduate students at Thunderbird in Arizona.  What initially struck me was that he had such a brilliant mind, yet so down to earth, open and approachable.  I also came to know him as such a gentle, sensitive and soft spoken spirit.  He had a great appreciation and love of nature and the animal world, and expressed that in his adoption of several animal companions over the years. We were in and out of touch over the years, but still maintained our connection regardless of our circumstances.  I hadn't seen him since we spent time together during the 2009 Holiday season sharing a Hill Country Holiday at Diana's home, so I was blessed that I was able to visit with him recently in April. However brief, we had an opportunity to enjoy an Italian meal together, and share desert on the balcony of his new apartment home as the sun began to set over his beloved TX Hill Country.  Good-bye sweet Joe.  Thank you.

  I wish I hadn't put off having dinner and getting to see you. I greatly enjoyed our friendship and exchange of ideas over these years. Jeanette and I will return to the Asian restaurant we went to to commemorate our friendship.
