Johanna Frances Scudder Mann was born February 28, 1930 in Hackensack, NJ. She was a member of Varick Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, Hackensack. She married Peter C. Mann Jr, December 18, 1950 and remained married until he left this earth July 9, 1996.
Johanna joined Bethel A.M.E. church 1960 and became active. She taught Sunday School, New Member’s Orientation, she was a class leader, Steward, on the financial team and ultimately became Mother of her Church. In 2010, she was honored as one of “The Remarkable Women Trailblazers”. She loved Bethel Church and her church family.
When she was no longer able to travel to church, she didn’t quit, she took on the assignment of calling the sick and shut in and became an unofficial adviser via phone.
Johanna was a simple but elegant woman. She stressed getting a good education and to ensure her children got a good education, she was very active and visible in the school system. She was president of the Wilson Junior High PTA for many years.
Johanna was a stickler for proper speaking and didn’t hesitate to correct bad grammar.
She was truthful, loving, caring and kind. She loved her family, not only her children but neices and nephews, cousins alike.
Johanna was the first black woman to join the League of Women Voters in Passaic, NJ. To support her WWII veteran husband, she became an active member of the Albert Lawson Memorial Post VFW 10117 where she held the office of treasurer.
She reluctantly moved to Austin in 2017 at the age of 87 when she was no longer able to take care of herself.
Friday, January 25, 2019, Johanna left this earth the same way she lived her life - - with dignity, respect and being an example of God’s grace to everyone in her presence.
Johanna was preceded in death by her parents, John and Hazel Bivans, husband Peter C. Mann, Jr.,
beloved brother Sam, sister Anna Howard, and granddaughter Jarien Nichole Roberson.
Left to honor and remember her unconditional love: sister, Ruby Thompson of South Carolina,
daughter Sharon (John), sons Peter of Puerto Rico (Damaris), Philip of Austin, grandchildren Natalie and Peter Mann IV, Ian DeHorney, great grandson, Devonte of Austin, her adopted children Shelly and Keith of New Jersey, a loving number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
