

John died in Austin, TX early on Saturday morning November 29, 2014 of heart failure, just one week after moving to Austin from Cambridge, MA. He was born in San Antonio, TX on September 22, 1933, to John Earl Bagalay Sr. and Katherine Ainsworth Bagalay. John's family soon moved to Houston. Growing up in Houston he graduated from Lamar High School, then three years later graduated from Baylor University. He then attended Yale University and graduated with a PhD in Philosophy in 1957. Dr. John Silber, who had also attended Yale with him, was then an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Texas and recruited John to teach philosophy at UT as well. While teaching philosophy he decided to also get a law degree from the University of Texas, which he did in 1964. After law school he joined Baker & Botts law firm in Houston, TX. While there he met his first wife, Carla Rohr and they were married in 1967. Their only child Christopher Dow Bagalay was born in Houston in 1969.
After Baker & Botts, John served as General Counsel of Texas Commerce Bank. Then in 1985 John Scanlan recruited John back to Austin to be General Counsel of the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA). In late 1989 John again answered the call of Dr. John Silber and accepted a new role of Managing Director of Boston University's Community Technology Fund. John married his second wife, Judy Cunningham Elliman in December 1989 and they moved to Boston, then Cambridge in 1991. John led the BU Community Technology venture fund and served on the board of several companies from 1989 – 2006.
Since 2006 John served as Chairman of the Board of Wave Systems, an Executive in Residence for EuroUS Ventures, and Senior Vice President for Launch In Us Alliance.
John leaves behind his devoted wife Judy Bagalay; son Christopher Bagalay of Austin; stepchildren, George T. Elliman, Julia S. Elliman, of Austin and Peter B. Elliman, his wife Cheryl and their children Daphne and Julia Elliman of San Carlos, CA.
Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3rd at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N Lamar Blvd. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday December 4th at All Saints Episcopal Church, 207 West 27th Street, and graveside services will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Huntsville, TX at 1:00 p.m. on Friday December 5th, 2014.
