

John Adam Figlan passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on Sunday January 8th, 2023, Austin, Texas. He leaves behind his wife Joan to whom he was married for 71 years; children Matthew, Alicia and Tracy; granddaughter Megan and son-in-law Gary. John was preceded in death by his father John Figlan and his mother Marie Pontek. John was born on September 8th in Detroit, Michigan. He met Joan while in high school. They were each other’s best friends and were married in 1951.
John graduated from the University of Detroit with a degree in chemical engineering and began his professional career with GM. After several years with GM, he was offered a job with IBM and moved to Vestal, New York. While at IBM Endicott, New York, he was asked to be one of their engineers at their manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas. In 1979, he and his family relocated to Austin. John retired as a senior engineer at IBM, Austin after 25 years of dedicated service. John had an ear for music and an eye for photography. He enjoyed playing the drums and was the drummer in a band called THE ROYAL HARMONIZERS. Regarding photography, he received a Professional Photographer certification from the esteemed New York Institute of Photography, New York City, New York.
John was a devoted Catholic. He was an active church member and participated in many activities including teaching religious education. In 1991, he received the certification of Spiritual Director from The Central Texas Pastoral Center. With this certification, he assisted others in spiritual counseling. At the age of 77, he completed a MA in Theology at St. Mary’s University and continued to teach religious education classes at St. Thomas More.
John was an inspiration to all; loved by many and will be missed but never forgotten.
