JD grew up in Houston, the son of Jack and Jane Head and attended Stanford University, from which he received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Thereafter, he came back to Texas and obtained his law degree from the University of Texas Law School. JD spent his legal career practicing environmental law. After five years working at Vinson & Elkins Law Firm in Houston, he moved to Austin and was the chief lawyer at the State’s Environmental Agency. Since 1990, he was a named partner at Fritz, Byrne, Head & Gilstrap, PLLC where he was recognized as one of Texas preeminent environmental lawyers.
JD was predeceased by his parents, Jane and Jack, and his brother Joe, to whom it was devoted. He is survived by his wife Debbi, who he dearly loved, and his sisters Lannie Whatley, Julie Thurmond and Lisa Head.
In his younger days JD,s favorite past times were fly fishing in the Northwest States and surfing, while certainly no expert, he surfed Northern California, Hawaii, Costa Rica and the Baja Peninsula. Some of his most cherished memories included the post surfing nighttime campfires in Baja with his surf compadres, Mike, Aubrey, and Baja Bill. As age crept up, JD enjoyed lap swimming as Deep Eddy Pool and Barton Springs, reading and traveling overseas with his beloved wife Debbi. He also enjoyed escaping the Texas heat to his Oregon Coast condo.
Throughout his fight with cancer, JD received countless acts of kindness from his friends and colleagues. His best friend Mike Woodward was always there with a positive attitude. JD loved him like a brother.
There will be no service per JD’s request. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to Marbridge Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
A celebration of JD’s extraordinary life will be held at a future date.
