
Just wanted to say thank you to everybody who took the time to make comments, send cards, attend the funeral, etc.  I already miss Dad so much, but having others out there say nice things makees us all feel better.

I attended high school with Johnny and was active in sports with him. If my memory is correct Johnny and his brother attended Franklin grade school for a short time. I'll always remenber him as a good athlete,gentleman and friend. May God comfort your family at this sad time.



We are both classmates from John's highschool days. Ernie remembers how hard some of their football games were played and wonders how they ever survived with such poor equipment.  I can remember that John always had a ready smile and was very friendly.     We were all so monetarily poor that I believe it made a stronger bond between the classmates; although we really didn't realize just how poor we were at the time.  We had a lot of good healthy fun in our highschool days.  Perhaps it has helped many of our classmates to be so successful in life and to appreciate the little things that make life worth while. John warmly welcomed me as a new member to the Advisory Council at the University of Texas School of Information several years ago and continued to welcome me every time I came to Austin for a meeting.  He respected the distance I traveled, but I am an alum of the school, so even more I respected him for his devoted efforts to improve librarianship and education in general.  He was a gracious and genuine man.  My condolences to his family.



To the Langford Family-  Although I did not know John very well personally, I knew him well through his relationship with my family.  He was a big part of my parent's lives.  They spoke of him often, and told me about what a wonderful man he was.  The thing I remember most about him was that he was always smiling.  He had a wonderful smile.  I will miss him, but want to let you know that his smile will live on in my memories.  I believe he is in heaven smiling down at us all.  Take care of yourselves during this difficult time. I have been privileged to have known John since he first joined Conoco R&D.  He was among the best of those bright young men who joined Conoco in those growth years for R&D and for the Chemicals Department which we both served.  His technical background plus his pleasant, mature, mild-mannered efficiency enabled him to rise to the very top of the marketing organization.  I deeply regret that his sudden passing prevented me from telling an old friend good-bye.  Now I am prevented from even attending his funeral because I will be at MD Anderson for tests for my recently diagnosed prostate cancer.  My heart goes out to his family in their great loss. It was very sad this morning to read about Johns passing. I have worked and also socialized with him for almost fifteen years, first in Saddle Brook and later in Houston. I will always remember the curious observer with the twinkle in the eye, the wisdom, the generosity and foremost the gentleman. He was the perfect example that nice and upstanding people can also be successful.  I have been blessed to have known him and my working years have been richer because of him.



John was a wonderful friend to our schoolthen the Graduate School of Library and Information Sciencefirst, by donating an Endowed Presidential Scholarship in the name of and to honor former dean C. Glenn Sparks, and then by serving on and chairing our development committee.  He brought to us a knowledge of and contacts in the business world that broadened our horizons.  I greatly enjoyed the conversations I had with John in my office, and my wife and I were privileged to be included in the celebration of his and Brendas marriage.  Indeed, in my professional life I have known few individuals who worked as enthusiastically, graciously, and effectively as he to contribute their knowledge and strengths to help students achieve their potential.



Growing up, the Langford home was like a second family to me.  John & Judy were always willing to treat me like they would their own son.  Later in college, John continued that role by regularly stopping by my dormitory and insisting that I come to dinner with him (usually accompanied by a number of my friends).  He always picked the best steakhouses and made sure we were all well-fed!    He also shared my enthusiasm for cars so whenever he would pick-up a new "toy", he would stop by and take me for a ride.  We spent a memorable Saturday driving up to Texas World Speedway to watch the SCCA races.  That was the first real sportscar race I had seen and it left a lasting impression.  I enjoy SCCA races to this day, thanks to John.  He was a good friend to me and had a major impact on those formative years of my life.  His legacy will live on in all the things he taught me and the good times we had together.  Goodbye John, I will miss you.
