John Richard Lock John Richard Lock, 62, went to rest January 21, 2004 after a courageous 11 year battle with ALS. As husband, father, friend, and mentor he brightened the lives of countless people. John was born December 24, 1941 in Baton Rouge, LA, and grew up in San Antonio, TX. He graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1960 and from Texas A&M University in 1964. John then attended the University of Texas Law School and received his degree in 1967. It was during his time at the University of Texas that he met Sidney Brient, whom he married on December 28, 1965. Their union continued 38 years, and they were blessed with two daughters. While he was working for the law firm of Small, Craig, and Werkenthin he earned his CPA. Then after working with Ed Rinehart and Jerry Neugent for several years, he began his own law practice, which eventually became Lock and Virr, P.C. John was board certified in Estate Planning and Probate Law as well as Tax Law, and he maintained his practice through December 2003. He was a rare attorney, known for both the excellent work and lifelong friendship he provided his clients. Though John was thoroughly devoted to his work he also made Christian outreach and fellowship the foundation of his life. For many years he was an active member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church and a loved and cherished member of many bible study groups. He additionally worked with and supported other causes, such as Rosebuds Ministry and El Buen Samaritano. Though in the later years Johns physical mobility was limited, he remained active and, in fact, seemed to be present all over the city of Austin. You could see him crossing 6th Street in his electric wheelchair, visiting the courthouse, and even carrying the Olympic Torch in the 2002 Winter Olympics. He was a mainstay of the Hyde Park neighborhood, always welcome at Quacks and Dolce Vita, where he is remembered both for his warm smile and countless orders of double expresso. We remember him now for his unconditional love, deep spirituality, family values, and generosity to all. Those he leaves to remember and cherish his life are his wife, Sidney Lock; daughters, Cory Lock of Austin and Elizabeth Lock of Houston; three sisters, Edith Ann Sellers of New Braunsfels, Julie Tetsworth of Tulsa, OK, and Sandy Anderson of San Antonio; and 3 nephews, 2 nieces, and many, many friends. He is preceded in death by his mother, Julia Hooker Sturdivant and father, John Henry Lock. The family wishes to thank the multitude of friends that have supported him through these last years. You are too many to name here, but you have touched our hearts more than you know. There will be a service celebrating Johns life at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, on the corner of Steck and Mesa, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24. A brief graveside service will follow immediately at Austin Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Johns name to Hospice Austin Christopher House, St. Matthews Episcopal Church, or to the charity of your choice.
