John Edward Oncken, 82, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2025. A long-time resident of Austin, John was born on December 27, 1942 in Houston, where he attended high school and met the love of his life, Linda. They married in September 1962 and had two daughters, Susan and Janet.
John attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied accounting. He began his illustrious banking career at MacGregor Park National Bank in Houston, eventually becoming president of First City Bank in Austin in 1989. John later took over operations at First City, then became Executive Vice President and Sales Manager over Treasury Management at Frost Bank before retiring in 2010. A problem-solver at heart, John held two financial patents that are still in use today.
While John found enormous success in his career, this success was incomparable to the love he had for his family. An attentive husband, father, and grandfather, John treated his loved ones with kindness and respect, always ready to provide those in distress with a feeling of safety and a much-needed laugh. He and Linda enjoyed traveling the world together, frequenting Alaskan cruises and taking trips to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park. John’s presence filled up a room and will be greatly missed. His family will remember his bright laugh and the twinkle in his eye.
He is survived by his wife Linda Oncken; daughters Susan Leftwich and Janet Prochnick; daughter-in-law Daisy Leftwich; son-in-law Earl Prochnick; and grandchildren Gwynne, Lisbeth, John, and Jessica.
