

JOHN ROBERT SINGLETON John Robert Bob Singleton, born September 20, 1919 at Terry, Orange County, Texas, the son of Levi and Clara Singleton died Thursday, April 8, 2004. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant twin sister, brothers Baker and Joe Singleton and a sister Mildred Escoe. Survived by a son Wayne Singleton and his wife Carrie, and a daughter Susan Boyett and her husband Brad, all of Austin. Other survivors include a sister Dolores Guidry, brother Milton Singleton and his wife Anita of Carrollton, Texas, sister Deanna Shannon and her husband Ray of Orange County, Texas, and numerous nephews and nieces. Mr. Singleton graduated from Texas A. & M. with a B.S. degree in Wildlife Science in 1943 and an M. S. in Wildlife Science in 1948. He was an employee of the State of Texas for more than 30 years, primarily with the Parks and Wildlife Department where he served as Executive Director from 1965 until retirement in 1970. He then worked for Ducks Unlimited, Inc., retiring from that organization in 1985. He next spent several years in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico as Director of Research for Ducks Unlimited de Mexico at their research station near Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. During World War II, Mr. Singleton served as an officer of the 80th Infantry Division, landing on Utah Beach in August, 1944. He was wounded and captured by German Army Troops near Argentan, France later that month. He was released by British Army Troops after a short period of time and was sent to England for recovery. He rejoined the 80th Division and commanded an Infantry Rifle Company during combat operations in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and Austria. Mr. Singleton was promoted to Plans and Training Officer at Battalion Headquarters. Mr. Singleton received his second wound during the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Silver Star with Oak-leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star with Oak-Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, and Infantrymens Combat Badge. He was also authorized the American Campaign Medal and Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars for participation in the following Campaigns: Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Other awards included the World War II Victory Medal and Distinguished Unit Badge which was awarded to 2nd. Battalion, 318th, Infantry Regiment. He received the Order of the Red Star from the U.S.S.R. Armed Forces. Mr. Singleton was Honorably Discharged in February, 1946 and then returned to Texas A. & M. for graduate studies. Mr. Singleton was a member of the Riverbend Church in Austin. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Arden Court who took such loving care of Mr. Singleton during the past year. A Memorial Service will be held in Austin at the Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel, 2 PM, Monday, April 12. Interment will be at Singleton Cemetery in Doty, Orange County, Texas.
