

Johnell attended the old Daule High School, in Cuero, Texas, and graduated in 1966 from Cuero High School, Cuero, Texas. Johnell attended Prairie View A&M University, Prairie, Texas, from 1972 to 1973, and continued his education at Victoria College, Victoria, Texas, in 1974.
Johnell met and married the love of his life, Barbra Love Griffin, on March 23, 1978, in Cuero, Texas. To this union two children were born. Jarreau Daniel Griffin (preceded in death), and Barrell Addison Griffin.
Johnell was preceded in death by his parents Johnell and Ora Lee Griffin, son Jarreau, brother, Kenneth Barnett and an aunt and two uncles.
Johnell proudly served in the United States (U.S.) Marine Corp, until 1971 when he transferred to the U. S. Marine Corp Reserves. During his time in the Marine Corp, Johnell was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, the Rifle Sharpshooter Badge, a Purple Heart Medal, and other awards. Johnell was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corp Reserves on November 1, 1973.
Johnell worked at Machining, INC, Round Rock, Texas, and retired after 39 years of service.
Johnell professed his hope in Christ at an early age at the Mount Bethel Baptist Church, Cuero, Texas. Upon moving to Austin, Johnell joined Saint James Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. B.W. McClendon.
Johnell was an avid sports enthusiast. Johnell loved playing and attending sporting events. Johnell played football and baseball during his time in the military, and also played baseball in the city leagues in Cuero, Texas. Johnell’s favorite sporting teams were the Houston Astros, San Antonio Spurs, and of course, THE Dallas Cowboys!
Johnell loved taking his sons Jarreau and Barrell to their little league baseball, football, and basketball games, and enjoyed watching his sons play the games.
Johnell leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife, Barbra; son, Barrell (Leslie) of Buda, Texas; daughter, Tanasha Lewis (Travis), Austin, Texas; sisters, Colleen Washington (Donald), Victoria, Texas, Shirley Houston, Corona, California, Brenda Thomas (Leonard), Portland, Texas; one brother, Malcolm Slade (Amber) Liberty Hill, Texas; grandkids, Jalen, Gianna, Caleb, Tiger; god-daughter, Stephanie (Missy) Mathis, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and best friends and homeboys from Cuero, Larry Mathis, and James Carter.
