He was a graduate of Austin High class of 2011. After three semesters at Art Institute of Austin, he left school and began his tortuous and joyful transition from Katie to Johnny, emerging as a hard-working, productive young man who brought joy to those with whom he shared his experiences. His generous, kind, creative, and loving spirit were maintained throughout this arduous process of transition. He lived out loud. He was deeply committed to those he worked with at Oak Hill Veterinary Clinic, Barton Springs Pool, Thundering Paws Animal Sanctuary, and his open mic family at Kick Butt Coffee. He held a very special place in his heart for his band, Inverse Medusa, and his best friend and bandmate, Gary Moore. Johnny was able to give voice and artistic expression to some very dark and painful places in his soul, and at the same time illuminate the room with exuberance and energy. He was an active member of Saint Johns United Methodist Church, a congregation in which he experienced love, acceptance, and purpose, sharing his joy and his gifts of mirth and music in delightful ways.
He is survived by his dad Phillip Crabtree, stepmom Lisa Nicks, brothers, Thomas and Andrew Crabtree, and grandparents Sue and Frank Speller and Lisette and Robert Stluka. He is preceded in death by his mother Alice Speller Crabtree, and grandparents Barbara and Reginald Crabtree.
A Funeral service will be held at St John's Methodist Church on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Thundering Paws Animal Sanctuary or The Trevor Project, providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ young people across the nation.
