Johnny Mata

Juan J. “Johnny” Mata, age 66, of Odessa, Texas, passed away on November 3, 2017, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on September 8, 1951, in Sterling City, Texas, to parents Juan Mata and Irene Sanchez.

Johnny graduated from Snyder High School, and met Mary Lou Garcia in Snyder, Texas through mutual friends. They were married on November 2, 1980, and were married over 30 years. Johnny enjoyed music, especially playing the guitar, but most of all he loved his family. They were everything to him! He spent the last year traveling with Mary Lou.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Mata; daughters, Erica Cano and husband Chris, Shahala Mata and boyfriend Rocky Tramonte, and son Johnny Mata Jr. and wife Jennifer; grandchildren, Dillon Mata, Michaelea “K.K.” Ybarra, Haze Mata, Zade Mata, Chris Cano Jr., Alexis Cano, and Brooke Cano, great-grandchildren Summer Rain Grimmett and Jerry Grimmett; his parents Juan Mata and Irene Zepeda; siblings, Leroy Martinez, Angie Martinez, and Felix Diaz; sister-in-law Debbie McCrary; niece Karrah McCary, and a host of other loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Jon Don Grimmett.

The family will receive visitors from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, on Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM, on Thursday, November 9, 2017, with a Graveside Service to immediately follow, all at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home and Memorial Park.
