Joseph Roy Crawford Jr., 96, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday December 23, 2024. He was born in Pearsall, Texas on January 28, 1928 to Joseph Roy Crawford, Sr. and Artie Myrtle Little Crawford. He was the first child of two and the last to pass. Joseph’s family lived in Pearsall, Texas, Waco, Texas, and Cisco, Texas before settling in Austin, Texas in 1945. He graduated from Austin High School in 1946, attended The University of Texas briefly, then started his working career at the Texas Highway Department in 1947. In 1953, he started his employment with the Texas Army National Guard at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas. He was ordered to Active Duty at Fort Polk, Louisiana in October, 1961 and was released in August, 1962, returning to Camp Mabry. In October, 1983, he retired from the Texas Army National Guard as the State Readiness Management Officer with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer C4. A few years later, he returned to the workforce for another nine years as a Courier for Austin Radiological Association. He was a Life Member of the National Guard Association Of Texas (NGAT).
Roy met his future wife Edith on a blind date set up by Edith’s sister Helen in the summer of 1952 in Austin. They were married 2 years later on August 7 at St. Austin’s Catholic Church and at the time of Edith’s passing in 2018, they had been married for 64 years.
Roy enjoyed playing golf, and after his military retirement, he convinced Edith that they needed to find a hobby to take up some of their free time - so in April 1987 they joined the Georgetown Country Club. During the summer of 1987 they were invited to join up with nine other couples at the Club to form a special golfing group called “The Odd Couples”. During the 31 years as members of this special group Roy always had a great time at the monthly tournaments and especially the annual trips to Ruidoso, NM and other locations in and out of Texas. Roy and Edith enjoyed their time with the group and met and made many friends along the way.
Roy was preceded in death by his mother Artie and father Joseph, Sr., and sister Artie Jeannette Crawford.
He is survived by his son Keith of Austin, Texas.
The family would like to thank the caregivers from The Meadows at Buckner Villas, and the staff at Concho Hearts Hospice for their help and support during Roy’s last weeks.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Roy’s name to Concho Hearts Hospice.
A visitation for Joseph will be held Friday, January 31, 2025 from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar, Austin, TX 78752.
