Joe was born July 25, 1964 to Crescencia and Joseph L. Stanley, Sr. in Austin, Texas and died unexpectedly January 28, 2023. Joe was born with autism, yet taught himself to read and spell. He had some amazing skills. He loved to memorize facts out of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not and The Guinness Book of World Records, as well as memorize information out of almanacs, and atlases. He had a great sense of direction and could remember how to get to places after visiting once. He loved being around people. When meeting someone new, he would ask their full name and birthdate, and then tell them on what day of the week they were born; and he would remember their full name for years afterward. Whenever someone wanted to know the name of a song on the radio, Joe could tell them the title, the artist, and the year the song was released. He enjoyed watching all sports, especially anything having to do with UT, and game shows. He looked forward to walking the Turkey Trot and the Capitol 10,000 each year, which was good, because his favorite pastime was eating.
Joe had a loving and forgiving spirit. He was gentle, kind, child-like, and one of the sweetest people you could ever meet; he wanted to please people. Still, there were times he left us frustrated, exasperated. Being with Joe was like holding up a mirror to what was inside of us. Sometimes we didn’t like what we saw; but in the end, he left each of us a better person. It’s difficult to think of a world without Joe; we all miss him terribly.
Joe is preceded in death by his three favorite people in all the world: his father and mother, and his brother Harold. He is survived by his sisters: Jane L. Stanley of Austin TX, Cynthia Brannen and husband Jim of Round Rock TX, Teresa Kaidy and husband Jim of Elliott City MD, and Mary Elliott and her husband Steve of Arlington TX, as well as nine nieces and nephews: Lindsey Lambert and Lily Gengenbach, Grace and James Kaidy, Lucy, Max and Glynnis Stanley, and Spencer and Aidan Elliott.
