

Joy was born May 12, 1925 in San Antonio, Texas to Emma Lane Haag and Raymond Dickey. After a lengthy illness she passed this world to the next on August 31, 2014 at the age of 89. She was proceeded in death by her parents, siblings, and two husbands. Joy is survived by her children Etta Christine “Chris” King and William “Bill” Gilbert. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Joy Sterkel, Wendy Scantlen, and Jennifer Thompson, as well as her great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her poodles, Yvette and Noel.
Joy worked for the State of Texas as an Administrative Secretary to the Superintendent at Travis
State School. After retirement she worked for AGE on Cedar Street for many years. She was interested in reading, travel, and the arts. She enjoyed designing and making her own clothes as well as painting, sculpting, and crafts.
Joy was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and a member of the Sydney F. Johnson Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She was very interested in genealogy and had done extensive research into the background of the Haag and Dickey families.
Joy had her own opinions and liked to express them. She was something different to us all. She could be kind, funny, silly, obstinate, stubborn, and down right ornery.
For the last 2 years of her life she receive outstanding care from the nurses and staff at South Park Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She also received excellent care and support from Hospice Compassus.
