

Joyce F. Holz Joyce F. Holz, a longtime Austin resident and loyal University of Texas at Austin alumnus passed away on Friday, September 19, 2003. Born in Kankakee, Illinois on the 13th of March, 1931, Joyce attended Lafayette elementary school and graduated from Kankakee High School in 1948. She married Robert K. Holz in May 1951. Joyce and her husband lived in Cheyenne, WY, Carbondale, IL, and East Lansing, MI, before coming to Texas in the fall of 1962. Joyce graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BSN nursing degree in 1973. She served at St. Davids Hospital, and as Head of Nursing at Holy Cross Nursing Home. She then took a position at the Austin State School where she was promoted to a Unit Director and then Director of Residential Services. She retired in 1994 after serving more than 17 years at the state school. Joyce Holz loved to travel and enjoyed many trips to Africa, Europe, Central America, and South America. But throughout her travels she retained a love of the Texas hill country, which she called home. She avidly embraced Austin culture and environmental causes. She was particularly fond of wolves and keenly interested in their conservation. Joyce is survived by her husband of 52 years, Robert K. Holz, professor emeritus of Geography, son Eric Holz, daughter-in-law Joyce Holz, grandson Clayton Holz, and her brother Ronald P. Harpin of Aurora, Minnesota. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, 27th September at 1:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel on Lamar.
