Judson Wroe was born September 11, 1957 in Austin, Texas and died October 21, 2013 in San Antonio. He spent most of his life on ranches and on horseback, in fulfillment of the passions of his life. A gifted athlete (including national ranking as a young tennis player), guitarist, and marksman, Judson was at his core a keen observer and lover of the natural world and its inhabitants, animal and human alike. He had impeccable manners, a soul full of compassion, generosity and love, and the ability to find humor in even the hardest of times. He highly valued family, loyalty, and integrity. Not surprisingly, he had many, many dear friends.
Like multiple family members before him, Judson graduated from Culver Military Academy in Indiana. As the school had just recently opened for girls, Judson was the very first Homecoming King ever elected by the Culver Girls Academy. And it was here at Culver that he discovered polo, became Captain of the Polo Team, and spent much of his life playing, teaching, managing and loving the sport (especially, as played by his son Mason.) No one who attended will ever forget the annual polo "tournament" created and hosted by Judson and called The Greasewood Open.
At TCU Ranch Management School Judson received a technical education in a business he already loved and innately understood. After graduation and at the very early age of 21, Judson was entrusted with the management of extensive ranching operations. He was one of the very few who was able to spend his life doing work he loved and at which he excelled.
Judson was a shy man and did not much enjoy the spotlight. He bragged only about his two beloved children, Mason Pike Wroe and Weslee Wroe Houston. He was delighted by his granddaughter Kynslee Lyn Houston and must have met in passing his new granddaughter Kaylyn Nicole Houston, born the day of his death. He admired the mother of his children, Barbara Lyn Wroe, for her role in raising "the two finest kids in the whole world." There were also a lot of horses involved in that process.
Judson is preceded in death by his father Willam A Wroe, and is survived by his mother Mary Jo Collie Wroe, sister Susan Wroe Perry, brother William A. Wroe, Jr., son in law Clay Evan Houston, six nieces and nephews and his four Wroe cousins and their children, with whom he shared a very close and loving family bond.
Judson will be buried in a private family service. A reception and celebration of his life will held at 2:00pm Saturday, November 2nd at Tarry House, 3006 Bowman Avenue, Austin. Anyone wishing to make a gift in Judson's memory may do so to: Culver Academies, 1300 Academy Road, Box 153, Culver Indiana 46511.
