He graduated from LaPorte High School in 1946 and began taking classes at the University of Houston at the age of 16 studying photography. He also went to Southwestern University where he studied to be a minister.
He worked as a Photographer for Austin American Statesman for 2 years, and various other jobs, until he started work with United Postal Service as a Mail Carrier, retiring after 32 years.
He was a minister at a small church in his early years, and his hobbies included photography, gardening, and eating seafood.
He is preceded in death by his Parents John and Clara Hovey, Brothers Royce, Wesley, and Wayne Hovey, Sister Gladys Ford, and Grandson Paul Hovey Jr.
He is survived by his Spouse of 68 years Betty Ruth Hovey, Brother Eugene Hovey, Son Paul and Spouse Judy Hovey, Daughter Annette Moseley, Daughter Joy and Spouse Jeff Sultemeier, 6 Grandchildren, 19 Great Grandchildren, and 5 Great Great Grandchildren.
While studying journalism in high school and working as a professional photographer, he photographed many major newsworthy events. When he was 17, he photographed the Texas City Disaster in April 1947 and took aerial photographs of the Battleship of Texas when it was docked at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site in 1948. While working for the American Statesman, he was tasked with photographing Texas Governor Ma Ferguson. He was horrified when the camera’s flash gun malfunctioned, and the bulb flew off the camera and hit the Governor in the chest. He said that she was very sweet and understanding but it was an embarrassing moment for him. Most of all, he was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather and loved spending time with his family and helping anyone who needed a hand. He loved life and loved to laugh; he was even somewhat of a practical joker. He will be remembered for his kind, loving, and gentle spirit, his giving nature, and his unwavering devotion to his family.
The family would like to thank Crystal and Joann with Hospice while in South Park Meadows Nursing Home for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in his final days.
