Lawrence was born to Hilbert and Henrietta King on April 13, 1940, who nurtured his warm heart and keen sense of humor from a young age. After graduating from Marvins Pines High School, Lawrence retired from IBM in Austin, TX and spent his free time enjoying classic cars, and his enthusiasm for sports, including boxing, basketball, and football.
He met the love of his life, Rita Mae Shelton, and 60 years together they created a beautiful family, welcoming their son Kevin Ira King and daughter Apryl Lyn King, who would become the light of Lawrence's life. His devotion to his family was unwavering and shared many beautiful memories together.
Lawrence's magnetic personality drew people from all walks of life, and his siblings, Hilbert King Jr., Lynn King Sr., Janice Holmes and Joseph Gamble, were among his closest confidants. The bond they shared was fortified by countless shared memories and the kind of laughter that echoes through time. Lawrence's cousins, Ray Jones, Charles Dabbs, Chancer Jones with nieces, nephews and other relatives also held a special place in his heart, and together they formed an unbreakable circle of kinship and camaraderie.
Those who knew Lawrence would describe him as loving, funny, and friendly—a man whose presence could light up a room and whose compassion knew no bounds. He had the rare ability to turn strangers into friends and friends into family. His jovial nature and quick wit were his hallmarks, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
The sports world held a special place in Lawrence's heart. He was known for wanting the Dallas Cowboys and Oklahoma Sooners to win each game they played. During the times they didn’t, he was just glad to be spending time watching his favorite teams amongst friends. His fondness for the television show "Sanford and Son" was so profound that it earned him the nickname "Fred" among friends and family.
Lawrence's legacy is one of boundless love, infectious laughter, and unwavering friendship. He leaves behind a family that adores him, friends who cherish his memory, and a community that was made brighter by his presence.
