Leonard Charles Hyman was born on February 1, 1917, in Brooklyn, New York, the eldest son of Lillian and Isadore Hyman, and died on June 29th, 2012 at the age of 95. At the age of 16, he met the love of his life, Hannah Schubb, and courted, married, and adored her for the remaining years of his life. A member of the Greatest Generation, he served his country in the United States army and found enjoyment in his later years through participation in the local chapter of the Jewish War Veterans' Association. A business opportunity following the Great Depression brought Leonard and his wife to Houston where they raised their family and cultivated friendships that would enrich their lives for many years to come. They found their first spiritual home at Congregation Beth Yeshurun and developed a lifelong relationship with Rabbi Jack Segal, who would later officiate at their 50th wedding anniversary ceremony in 1989.
Leonard and Hannah moved to Austin in 1974, and Leonard found meaning and the joy that comes from service at his second spiritual home, Congregation Agudas Achim, where he was Chairman of the High Holy Days and Chevrah Kadisha Committees for many years, serving as a mentor for those who would follow in these leadership positions in the future.
He devoted his life to his family and is survived by his wife of 73 years, Hannah Hyman; son Dr. Jonathan Hyman and wife, Norma of Houston, Texas; son Donald Hyman of Austin; daughter, Sari Waxler and husband Mel of Austin; seven grandchildren, Adam Hyman (Chicago), Daniel Hyman and wife Tamar (Brooklyn), Kimberly Kass and husband Will (Austin), Michael Hyman and wife Bracha (Jerusalem), Blake Waxler (Austin), Melanie Hyman and Victoria Hyman (Giddings), and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Gerard Hyman and wife Natalie of Beverly Hills, California, sister-in-law Joy Hyman Goldberg of Toledo, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews. Leonard is predeceased by his brother Dr. Melvin Hyman.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Leonard's memory be made to Congregation Agudas Achim, 7300 Hart Lane, Austin, Texas 78731 or to the charity of your choosing.
