Lewis Anderson Myers Jr., a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel and Professor Emeritus of Management at St. Edward’s University peacefully passed away on April 7, 2026, at the age of 93, in Austin, Texas.
Born January 23, 1933, in Santa Rosa, California, he was the son of Lewis Anderson Myers Sr. and Julia Mendonca Myers. Growing up in northern California encouraged a lifelong love of nature, gardening and bird watching.
At just 19 years old, he began a 20-year career in the U.S. Air Force. As a navigator, he flew more than 200 missions during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, demonstrating courage and skill under the most demanding conditions. His service was recognized with two Distinguished Flying Crosses, multiple Air Medals, and numerous commendations. Yet, those who knew him best understood that his pride in serving went far beyond medals, it was rooted in commitment to something larger than himself.
Dr. Myers earned his PhD in Management and Information Science from The University of Texas at Austin in 1980. He taught at several universities between 1974 and 1990, including Texas A&M University, California State University Sacramento, American Technological University and The University of Texas in Austin. In 1990, he joined St. Edward’s University, where he served as a professor of management until his retirement in 2017. He was later honored with the title of professor emeritus.
Austin became not just his home, but his community. He was actively involved in the Barton Hills Neighborhood Association and the USAF Retired Activity Group, always finding ways to stay engaged and connected. One of the most meaningful expressions of his generosity was opening his home to international students over the years. These relationships became lasting friendships, especially with Lorenza Bianchi Maladrone of Italy and Yuichi Gonda of Japan—connections that reflected his belief in learning from others and embracing the wider world.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jacqueline Bartoli Myers (1932–1987), and is survived by his wife, Mary Sweeney Campbell.
He is also survived by his son, Garry Myers (Doreen); daughters Cathy Winter (Ronnie), Carole Moore (Tommy), and Gretchen Myers (Mary Montgomery); six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren & numerous cousins and extended family.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Ernest Myers (1939–2002); his parents, Lewis Anderson Myers Sr. (1904–1985) and Julia Mendonca Myers (1907–2002); his grandson, Seth Moore (1984–1991); his nephew, Ernest Myers (1966 – 2002); and his stepdaughters, Michelle Campbell (1967–1995) and Christine Campbell (1970–1998).
Those who knew Lewis will remember a man of quiet strength, steady intellect, and enduring kindness—an Air Force Officer, a professor, a mentor, and above all, a man who showed up for the people and communities he cared about.
