

Lois became a child of God through Holy Baptism at Messiah Lutheran in Houston, Texas on August 28, 1938. She made her public profession of the Christian faith and was confirmed at Our Savior Lutheran in Houston, Texas on April 6, 1952.
On December 27, 1964, Lois was united in Holy Matrimony with John Lange at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Houston. They were blessed with two daughters: Theresa and Rebecca.
Lois graduated in 1958 from junior college at Lutheran Concordia College of Texas in Austin, Texas. She continued her education at Concordia Teacher’s College in River Forest, Illinois, and graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She went on to receive a Master of Education in 1990 from Southwest Texas State University.
Lois was an exemplary Lutheran school teacher throughout her life. She entered the teaching ministry at First Lutheran in Manhattan Beach, California (1 yr). Her other schools included Grace Lutheran in Escondido, California (1 yr), St. John Lutheran in Long Beach, California (5 yrs), Immanuel Lutheran in Houston, Texas (1 yr), and Trinity Lutheran in Austin, Texas (2 yrs). Lois concluded her teaching ministry at St. Paul Lutheran in Austin, Texas (26 yrs). She devoted 36 years to the mission of teaching and spreading the good news of God’s love in Lutheran education.
Lois passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, January 23, 2026. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Leona Hillegeist, and brother Reynold Hillegeist.
Lois is survived by her husband of 61 years, John; daughter, Rebecca Lange; daughter, Theresa Watson and husband Greg; grandchildren Geoffrey, Andrew, and Hannah O’Connor and husband Christian; sister Elaine Barbee and husband Richard; sister Sharon Holmes and husband Michael; sister-in-law Mary Hillegeist; and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Austin, located at 3501 Red River Street, Austin, Texas 78705.
