Lorene Schavrda Smith Lorene Schavrda Smith, age 90, of Houston, Texas, passed away February 9, 2004. “Mimi” and her twin sister, Irene, were born two months prematurely on August 8, 1913, in Bellville, Texas. They were kept alive by the oven door in shoeboxes. Her early life was spent living in Galveston and she was proud to still recite the address of each house they had lived in there. Her family moved to Houston in the 1920’s and her father delivered ice to homes and businesses in the Heights. She graduated from Reagan High School in 1930 and married Herbert Smith in 1933. She was preceded in death by Herbert, Irene, her parents Frank and Nonie, and son-in-law, John Schilthuis. She will be missed by her daughter, Carolyn, son and daughter-in-law Don and Charlotte Smith, granddaughters Sharyl, Susan, Amy and Angela, and great grandchildren Hannah, John, Mary Hazel and Lily. She is also survived by her sister Lillie Belle, nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2004, at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston. Pallbearers will be grandsons-in-law Michael Burshnick, Kevin Anderson, and Christopher Lee, and friends Joe Fischer, Larry Johnson, Ray Herbrich, Sam Ashmore, and Chris Boyers.
