Mrs. Ludmilla Roth, born Kuhn, on February 27, 1923, in Dachau, Germany, was the last survivor of six siblings. She witnessed firsthand some of the horrors of Hitler’s reign. Jesus Christ, her personal Lord and Savior, called her home on Sunday, June 17, 2012, at 6 AM.
One daughter, also named Ludmilla, was born to her in 1945 in her first marriage. She subsequently moved to Québec, Canada in 1957 with her second husband, Karl Roth, where they lived before coming to Austin, Texas, in 1965.
During her 20-year employment at UT, she started in the then called “Union,” moved on to the Alumni Center, and finally to the UT-President’s residence at Meadowbrook. She, as housekeeper, took care of kids, pets, visitors, and the families of Drs. Rogers, Flawn, Spurr and Cunningham. All the various cleaning-, pool-, entertaining-, yard- and decorating UT-crews loved and miss her because she insisted they share in her daily “cookie-and-tea” break. When she eventually retired in 1988, everyone in her neighborhood knew her as the “Candy Lady.” Never without candy or treats in her pockets, even animals – squirrels and blue jays on campus, and cats, dogs, possums and birds in her neighborhood all KNEW her personally for her generosity.
She regularly attended Grace of the Good Shepherd Baptist Church in North Austin. Of special delight were her two grandsons, Ken and Kirk, and great-granddaughter Allison, who will sorely miss their “Oma.” Mrs. Roth had been a widow since 1992, and in her later years succumbed to dementia and Alzheimer’s.
“Oma” was moved to “A New Haven for Elders,” a most excellent private residence at 8907 Ampezo Trail here in Austin for her care, where two veritable “angels,” first Marylou, and then Mario attended to her. The staff there, with owners/operators Dan and Nimfa DelaCruz, both RN’s, cannot be praised enough, because they believe residents under their care are just like beloved family.
Those left mourning are Mrs. Ludmilla McGlamery and her husband, H. Kelly McGlamery; Ken McGlamery and his wife, Nicole, with daughter, Kenlyn; Kirk McGlamery with daughter, Allison; along with numerous friends, neighbors and acquaintances.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening, on Thursday, the 28th of June 2012, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas.
A funeral service will be conducted at ten o’clock in the morning on Friday, the 29th of June 2012, in the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas. Interment will follow in Austin Memorial Park, Austin, Texas.
