

Mable Hawley Sikes Mable Hawley Sikes was born May 29, 1925 in Graham, Texas. After a long illness, she passed away on October 11, 2004, in Austin, Texas. She was the youngest of ten children of Royal Amos and Mamie Agnes Hawley. Mable graduated from Denton High School on her fifteenth birthday and received a B.A. Degree in Library Science from what is now named North Texas State University prior to her eighteenth birthday. She married Roger Haltom Sikes of Bryan, Texas, a World War II veteran, in June 1946. She worked in numerous libraries including the U.S. Army Library of Camp Livingston, Louisiana, Panhandle County Library, Carnegie Library in Bryan, Texas, Texas A& M University Library, as well as the Austin Public Library and many of the AISD libraries. Mable has been an active member of the Church of Christ from an early age. She has lived mostly in Austin for the past 40 years. She was preceded in death by her father, Royal Amos Hawley and mother, Mamie Hawley; brothers, Ervin Hawley and Carr Hawley; sisters Ethel Erickson, Viola Jack, and Agnes Gibson. Her surviving siblings include Ruth Stewart, Allene Burrows, Ida Mae Sikes, and Kate Forrest. She is survived by her husband Roger Haltom Sikes, her children, Joy Ruth, Gary Sikes, Roger Sikes, Jon Sikes, and Lisa Sikes. Mable was much loved by her 14 grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Austin Alzheimers Association. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 13, 2004, from 4:00 PM 6:00 PM at Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home. Services will be held on Thursday, October 14, 2004, at 9:00 AM at Wilke-Clay-Fish Chapel, followed by graveside services to be held at 2:00 PM at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
