Margarito "Mike" C. Huerta

Margarito "Mike" C. Huerta passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 5, 2014. He was surrounded by his family at his side. He was born in Taylor, TX on June 10, 1933 to Mercedes and Sebastian Huerta. He began his travels at age 11 when he set out on his own to find work in Michigan. He traveled back and forth on his own until his mother asked him to stay. He married his high school sweetheart Mary Louise Calderon on October 5, 1952. Together they raised 5 children, 17 grandchildren, 14 great grand-children and one great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by Mercedes Baltazar, Sebastian Huerta, and grandson, John Thomas Villegas. He is survived by his brothers Lupe, Joe and Paul Baltazar, sisters Hope Marshall, Rosie Gannaway, Margie White and Paula Gomez. His children include Janie Lindsey, Russ (Michelle) Huerta, Mercy (Mark) Gil, Michael (Dolores) Huerta and Mark (Melissa) Huerta. Grandchildren include Pennie Sachs, Michelle Galvan, and Erica Chandler; Joshua Huerta, Hannah Huerta and Michael Huerta; Mark Anthony Gil, Matthew Gil, Micah Gil and Miranda Gil; Elias Huerta, Michael Huerta and Leah Huerta; Megan Ramon, Justin Huerta and Julia Huerta. Great-Grandchildren include Hunter, Gaerity, Madison, Ayla, Avery and Sebastian; Isaiah, Luke, and Caleb; Liana Nastasi; Tony and Lissy; Matthew Jr. and Lola. Great-great grandchild Ethan.

Mike was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge #202, Cursillos in Christianity retreat member of San Jose Catholic Church. He bought his first short haul truck in 1959 and began his own business, leasing out his trucks to Capital Aggregates for 52 years. In 1987 he moved up to an 18 wheeler to travel the United States. His travels took him along the Midwest and East Coast. The City of Austin recognized him for being the oldest truck driver without receiving a moving violation in the City of Austin. In the early 90's the street where he lived was renamed to Huerta Street in his honor. He retired in 2009 and spent his days at home with the love of his life. One thing always stood out in his life, there was always time to dance. Whether in our living room on a Friday night or at a family function, he always showed us how fun life can be.

A rosary will be held on Monday, June 9th at 7:00 pm at Weed Corley-Fish Funeral Home, the funeral will be held on Tuesday, 10:00 am at St. Ignatius Catholic Church with interment to follow at Assumption Cemetery.
