With profound love and gratitude, the family of Marie Shuler celebrates the extraordinary life of a woman whose spirit was as radiant as her smile. Marie passed away peacefully in Georgetown on November 16 at the age of 103, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, independence, and resilience that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Born in Austin on Groundhog Day, February 2, 1922, Marie grew up in old West Austin and graduated from UT with a bachelor's degree in education.
Marie's smile could light up any room and lift the spirits of those around her. She loved to laugh, and her humor and warmth were constants throughout her long and vibrant life. Fiercely independent, she remained in her own home until the age of 101, moving only when rehabilitation was required after a broken hip. Even then, her determination and strength never wavered.
Her independence was legendary. At 100 years old, she still held her driver's license. Though her family lovingly urged her not to drive, Marie couldn't resist the freedom of sneaking down to the nail salon in Pflugerville — a small act that perfectly captured her spirited nature and zest for life.
Marie lived life on her own terms, embracing each day with courage, laughter, and grace. Her family and friends will remember her not only for her remarkable longevity but for the way she filled every moment with joy and determination. She taught us that age is no barrier to independence, and that a smile and a laugh can carry us through even the hardest times.
Professionally, Marie was a trailblazer. She worked in the insurance industry from 1960 until her retirement in 1985, serving as President of the Federation of Insurance Women of Texas. After retiring, she devoted herself to volunteer service, contributing thousands of hours with the Seton Hospital Auxiliary. She later helped establish the volunteer auxiliary at Austin Heart Hospital, where she was honored with the Frist Humanitarian Award for her outstanding service.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Marie Koch Mason and Joseph Joyce; her beloved aunt who raised her, Anna Ewalt; and her brother, Joe Joyce, Jr. She is survived by her loving family: son Bill Josey (wife Jodi) of Stevenson Ranch, California; daughter Deb Loucks (husband Bob) of Austin; son Jack Josey (wife Cathy) of Georgetown; and daughter Jan Spears (husband Scott) of Pflugerville.
Grandchildren include Jad Josey, Tracy Spelman (husband Todd), Nick Koslan (wife Veronica), D'Arcy Hall (Lila), Sarah Fletcher (husband Jeff, Grace Pyka (husband Jared), Rebecca Medland (Oliver), Laura Horton (husband Luke), Hayley Loucks (Basil), Brooke Thornton (husband Chris), Colton Spears (wife Taylor), and Emma Josey. Marie was blessed with twenty-two great-grandchildren. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Autumn Leaves staff in Georgetown and to her devoted caregivers Debbie Day, Michelle Matz, Ariane Monsivais, and DeAnn Yost-Zitko.
Marie's life was a gift, her presence a blessing, and her memory will remain a source of comfort and inspiration for all who had the privilege of knowing her. The funeral service is on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at 10 AM at Cook-Walden, 6100 North Lamar in Austin.
A committal service is scheduled at Oakwood Cemetery Annex, 1600 Comal St, Austin, TX 78702, on December 3, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm.
