Marjorie Ann Joseph, “Aunt Margie” passed away peacefully Sunday, January 28th at the age of 91 surrounded by her loving family and friends. Aunt Margie was the 6th of 7 children, first generation American, born July 8, 1926. Her parents, Fronia and Salem Joseph immigrated from a small village in Lebanon in 1906. She was the matriarch of our family. She always encouraged us to follow our dreams and was always there to lend her love and support.
Aunt Margie had a passion for real estate and could sell the “Garden of Eden” to God. The Austin Board of Realtors honored her with a lifetime achievement award. She was also a founding pioneer of Youngblood’s Fried Chicken when they first arrived in Austin in the late 1950’s. Most recently, Youngblood’s honored her at their grand-re-opening in Austin in the Mueller development. Aunt Margie “had 14 children.” They were her nieces and nephews that she spoiled and loved unconditionally. Aunt Margie took pride in giving us all tips on driving, cooking, fighting, dating, and real estate, even when we did not ask for it! She never missed a family function, event, celebration, and always arrived with great food and an endearing heart. Everyone who knew Aunt Margie has their own special memory or story of her. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, monthly poker games and weekend football boards. Aunt Margie was a member of the American Lebanon Association (ALA) Club and The Cedars of Lebanon Club of Austin. She never missed attending the Southern Federation of Syrian Lebanese American Club, (SFSLAC) conventions.
She lived life large and gave her illness a “run for the money”. She was cared for by a devoted family member that we consider a sister and she considered a daughter, Billie Martin, her guardian angel.
Aunt Margie was preceded in death by her parents, Fronia and Salem Joseph, siblings, Mary Sconci and husband Tony Sr, Magdalene Joseph, Joe J Joseph, Sr, and wife Nora, John E Joseph, George C Joseph,Sr and wife June, Jeanette Joseph Burkett Gautier, and Aunt Lucille Joseph Nassour. Nephews Donald Sconci, Tony Sconci, Jr and wife Jo Gail and great-niece Melisa Sconci and great nephew Lee Jay Burkett.
Aunt Margie leaves behind her brother-in-law Richard F. Gautier and three generations of nieces and nephews, hundreds of friends and colleagues and a legacy of love and laughter.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the SFSLAC Scholarship Fund in memory of Margie Joseph or to St Jude’s Children’s hospital.
A rosary is scheduled for Friday, February 2nd at 7:00 pm at Cook-Walden Funeral Home on North Lamar. A funeral Mass is scheduled for Saturday, February 3rd at 9:30 am at St Mary’s Cathedral, officiated by the Rev. George C Joseph, Jr and Msgr. Donald J Sawyer.
