A native Austinite, Martha was born at Breckenridge Hospital. She was the third of four children born to Ewing and Nila Root.
She attended the Austin Public School System, graduating in 1972 from McCallum High School. She went on to earn her Accounting degree from the University of Texas, where she served as editor of the Cactus yearbook.
After graduating, Martha went to work for the Texas State Comptroller's Office in Dallas where she met her husband, Mark Middleton. They later built a home in Wimberley, Texas where they have lived for the past ten years.
An avid Longhorn fan, Martha attended UT home games regularly and loved going to the Red River Rivalry and the State Fair.
Martha is survived by her husband, Mark and two stepdaughters, Amber Smith and her husband Jarrod, Amy Canaan and her husband Dave along with two grandchildren, Will McVey and Madison Canaan. Also, two sisters, Karen Reeves and Jan Root and partner, Richard Chaffee, sister-in-law Lana Hodges Root, one aunt, Hazel Pipkin and two nephews, Sean Reeves and his wife, Annie and Michael Root. She is also survived by triplet great niece and nephews, Eadan, Ashby and Kylie Reeves, along with several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and older brother, Steve Root.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 9th, 1pm at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd. Austin, TX 78752.
