

Marvin Holmes Masteron, Esq. was born to James Marvin Masterson and Dr. Althea Holmes Masterson on June 12, 1967.He attended St. Timothy Lutheran Elementary Middle School. He later graduated from Cass Technical School where he excelled as a sousaphone player in the band and the swim team. Marvin received state honors in swimming. He was captain of the swim team his senior year and a member of the National Honor Society. He was also an officer in the Youth Caucus of New Detroit, Inc. The Caucus supported sponsored trips to Washington, D.C. in the Close Up program.Marvin was a 1989 graduate of Dartmouth College. At Dartmouth he was very involved in extra curricular activities and he was the assistant in the English as a Second Language lab. He taught language arts in elementary school in New York City and worked at Saks and Harve Bernard prior to entrance into law school. He was a 1994 graduate of the University of Maryland Law School. He worked for the Baltimore Orioles in food service during his law school years.He remained in Baltimore and became very active in the political arena. He was the Assistant Secretary of State of Maryland, one of the youngest ever appointed to this position. He was also appointed Secretary of Minority Affairs, State of Maryland. Marvin taught election protocol to election workers prior to elections. He was involved with youth and mentoring. He served on several boards of directors, including the YMCA of Central Maryland, Weinberg Family Center and the NAACP. He was a delegate of the National Democratic Convention twice.Marvin's early interest was to be a doctor, so he volunteered at Sinai Hospital. However, he worked in the legal department at NBD Bank the summer after his first year of college and his interest changed to becoming a lawyer.Marvin’s activities extended to Cincinnati, Ohio, his next city of residence. Among them was a member of the Board of Directors of Orion Academy and Alliance Academy Schools and president of the North Avondale Community Association.
Marvin was a Christian. He demonstrated it in his daily life. He was a member of Outer Drive Faith Lutheran Church Since preschool age. As he grew, he became active in activities including Sunday school and youth group. He spoke for the youth at the retirement celebration of longtime pastor, Rev. Theodore Daniel. He returned while in college to be speaker on a Youth Sunday. Marvin was a founding director of the Open Church in Baltimore.
Marvin was a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and he was active in both the Baltimore and Cincinnati chapters of the fraternity.
He became ill shortly after his arrival in Austin, Texas. However, his personality was such that he gained friends quickly. He exuded love to all, and he was well liked. He had friends he met in elementary school through law school and beyond. The family has received a deluge of positive comments and accolades.
Marvin was employed with General Electric Corporation Aviation as Digital Contract Counsel.
He loved his family unconditionally. He was totally devoted to his parents, especially his ailing father. He was considered “The Rock.”
His memories will remain in the hearts of his parents, James Marvin and Dr. Althea; his brothers, Merton and Byron; and sister, Marvalis; godbrother, Roland Poindexter; a special “auntie”, Dr. Jeannette Poindexter, other aunts and uncles, many cousins, especially Jeanne and her son, Jorell of Austin, Texas; and many friends and acquaintances.
