Growing up the oldest child to two brothers in Wiltshire, she enjoyed riding her pony and exploring the English countryside. She later attended and graduated from her beloved boarding school, Claremont in Surrey. After leaving school, she lived and worked in Zermatt, Switzerland where she learned to speak German and to ski. Her early travels also took her to Scandinavia, Canada, and later to Boston, Massachusetts. In Boston, she worked for the Christian Science Monitor where she made dear and lifelong friendships. She maintained a lifelong interest in current events and remained deeply engaged with both national and global politics.
In London, in 1964 Mary Lou married Texan, Dr. James Rush Brock. Thereafter she moved to Austin, Texas where Jim was a professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas. Subsequently, Jim’s career led the young family to spend a year in Paris, France, where Mary Lou continued to refine her fluency in French. Together, Jim and Mary Lou led a meaningful and distinguished life, and were the proud parents of two daughters, Alison and Ianthe. Her granddaughter Carey Beth was the light of her latter years. She was a dedicated, lifelong Christian Scientist and a devoted member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Austin, Texas.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Rush Brock, and her middle brother, Richard Waghorn. Cherishing her memory are her brother David Waghorn and his wife, Jean Waghorn, her daughters Alison Brock and Ianthe Brock Wooley, son-in-law John Wooley, granddaughter Carey Beth Wooley, her beloved dog Coverdale and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. The family deeply appreciates all who cared for her during the past year and a half. We will never forget your generosity of spirit, care and love. She lived her life dedicated to her faith, Christian Science, and adored her home country of England. We all loved her and will carry on her spirit of service, caring and love for others.
