Maryeann Grimes, beloved wife, mother, grandmother (Nana), passed away Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003. Born Ft. Wayne, Indiana, March 5, 1931 to Ruby Leona and Fred Wartz, she married Wilford A. Grimes, MD, May 1, 1951 and lived in Houston until 1993 when he retired and moved to Austin. Raised in a home dedicated to the arts, her mother founded the Conservative Arts Society of Houston and her father was instrumental in the founding of the Houston Youth Symphony. Music was an integral part of her life. Accomplished on numerous instruments, her first love was the piano. She studied on scholarship at St. Louis Institute of Music, then privately for years with Ruth Burr and Amanda Vick Lethco. She was a member of the Tuesday Morning Music Club, Houston Medical Society Auxiliary, accompanist for the Medical Society Choraliers for years and active with numerous other instrumental and choral groups. A member of the Church of Christ, she was involved in many activities of her church life. She leaves many evidences of her constant pursuit of excellence as a wife, mother and grandmother: gourmet cook, excellent seamstress, skilled knitter and producer of many needlepoint masterpieces. Unusually attentive to the needs of others, she always remembered and recognized birthdays and anniversaries. Outgoing and social, she loved her many friends, her mainstay during her long illness which she endured with incredible courage and patience. She lost her battle surrounded, and comforted by her adoring husband, children and grandchildren. Left to cherish her memories are her husband, Wil of 52 years, her children, Arden Brands, Leslie and husband Ford Alexander, David and wife, Lizz Grimes, grandchildren, Morgan Brands, Taylor and John Alexander, Ian, Annie and Jack Grimes, all of Austin. The family profoundly appreciates the dedication of the many physicians and therapists who assisted in her care. Her special heroes were Dr. William Kessler, Dr. Scott Blois, Dr. Samir Patel, and Miss Colleen Basler of the Seton Rehabilitation Department. Private burial ceremony in Brookside Memorial Park, Houston, Texas. Memorial Celebration of her life on Saturday, Sept. 20, 1:30 pm at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3003 Northland, Austin, Texas. Instead of usual remembrances, the family suggests memorial contributions to Austin Graduate School of Theology, 1909 University Avenue, Austin, Texas 78705.
