

Viola Mauryene Skelton Kite, 99, passed away Thursday February 22st from natural causes. Mauryene was born in McKinney Texas October 8, 1918 to Benjamin Frank Skelton and Lizzie Beck Skelton. Her early life was spent in McKinney where she graduated from McKinney High School. After getting her BS in Home Economics from Fresno State University she returned to Texas and met her husband, Tom Kite. They were married in July 1942 and lived in Dallas where during the war years she worked for the Texas and Pacific Railway while he served in the Navy. After returning from the Pacific, Tom started working for the Internal Revenue Service and they started their family. In 1962 Tom and Mauryene, along with their two children, Tom Jr. and Karen, moved to Austin when Tom was promoted to the directorship of the IRS Service Center.
Mauryene was an avid golfer and loved playing casually with family and friends as well as participating in numerous ladies tournaments in and around Austin. They were members of the Austin Country Club where she was an active member in the WGA. She also enjoyed traveling, to various destinations, not only to play golf, but to spectate numerous golf tournaments when Tom Jr. participated.
Later she fell in love with needlepoint and produced some wonderful wall hangings and Christmas stockings for all her family. She was a caring wife and mother who loved her family more than anything. Tom and Mauryene were long time members of Hyde Park Christian Church and she was a member of the Andrew Caruth Chapter in the DAR.
She lived a long and rewarding life, leaving her mark on just about everyone she met. Mauryene is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Oliver Kite, survived by her son Tom Kite Jr. and daughter Karen Pittinger, 6 grandchildren, Stephanie, David, Paul, Dana, Laura and Carlye as well as 7 Great Grand Children, Nick, Ben, Will, Brooke, Adaya, Brandt and Annie.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, February 28th at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N Lamar Blvd.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to The First Tee of Austin Texas.
