Max Edwin Hale went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 2, 2016. He was born on October 5, 1914, in Rusk County, Texas. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth (Richardson) Hale; his father and mother, Howell Pope and Mary Emma (Holt) Hale; two brothers, Louis France and Howell Holt Hale; and his son-in-law, Ronald Ray Anderson.
Max is survived by his son, Larry Hale; daughter, Judy (Hale) Anderson; granddaughter, Julie Bailey (Bob); grandson, Eddie Anderson (Alyson); great-grandchildren, Joshua (Rachel), Nichole, and Jonathan; and great-great grandchildren, Isaac, Ruth, and Elizabeth, as well as three nephews and one niece.
Max attended East Texas Baptist College in Marshall, Texas, and Tyler Commercial College in Tyler, Texas. He was a partner in the hardware business with his father before going into the United States Postal Service in Kilgore, Texas. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He received a Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf Cluster and was a POW in Germany.
Max transferred to Dallas, Texas, and actively participated in the Supervisor Organization of the Dallas Post Office. He served as an officer and president of the NAPS Branch 86 of Dallas, and he retired from the regional post office department there.
After retiring from the post office, Max and Ruth volunteered for over 20 years at Seton Hospital and Marbridge Ranch. Both he and Ruth volunteered for many organizations during their married life. He often said that retirement was a full-time job.
Max was an active member of the Baptist church until he was not able to attend due to his health. He served as a deacon from 1959 and was an officer and chairman of the deacons. He also taught elementary, junior high boys, and adult Sunday School classes. He regularly prayed for his family and friends and looked for ways to bring a word of encouragement to those who surrounded him. He will be greatly missed.
There are many people to thank for the love, care, and help they gave to Max during his lifetime and especially in his later years — family, friends from past churches and Crestview Baptist Church, Marbridge Ranch, the Retirement Nursing Center, Buckner Villa, friends at Frost, his long-time attorney, Nurses Case Management, Senior-Minded, wonderful caregivers, Cook-Walden, and many others, all who went incredibly beyond what was expected in their service to Max and Ruth. May you be blessed
for your kindness.
The family will receive friends at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd. in Austin, Texas, on Monday, November 7 at 9:00am with the service at 10:00am.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions to the Marbridge Foundation, P.O. Box 2250 Manchaca, TX 78652.
