Surrounded by family, Merle Taisie Sheridan was called to rejoice with the saints & angels on 19th of August, 2010. Born in 1924 in Cameron, Texas, Merle was one of 14 children born to the late Roy and Teresa Kornegay. As a young woman, Merle moved to Austin to work as a devoted rehabilitation counselor at the School for the Blind. In 1944, she met and married Edward John Sheridan from Hoboken, NJ, one of the first assigned to Bergstrom Air Force Base. They were married for more than 60 years. When Ed returned from the war, they started their family. When she and Ed moved into their new home, she packed her kids in the car, drove to Bull Creek and dug up enough small trees to plant one in every yard on the block. The trees grew with the neighborhood, as did Merle and Ed’s life together. Known as “Aunt” Merle throughout the neighborhood, Merle built a baseball diamond in the backyard - one of the ways she made their home the gathering spot. This was Merle, always creating countless happy adventures and lifelong memories for her family and neighbors. Merle’s happiness was contagious. Even in the midst of the devastating disease that is Alzheimer’s, her happy, sparkling eyes would continue to bring a smile to those around her. Merle and Ed were among the founders of St Louis Catholic Church where she led the Senior Group for many years and Ed became a 4th degree Knight of Columbus. Their devotion and faith were the strong foundation of their lives. Merle will be forever remembered by her beloved children: Edward Sheridan and wife Aleane of Round Rock; Catherine Sheridan of Austin; Michael Sheridan and wife Brenda of Virginia; treasured grandchildren, Dylan Smith, Carrie Bolin, Angie D’Ambrosio, Jason Sheridan, Ahran Dunsmoor, Celeste Ptak, Joseph Dunsmoor, and 11 precious great-grandchildren, along with countless other friends and family who were blessed to know her. Merle is predeceased by the love of her life, Edward John, and her eldest daughter, Mary Frances Garton. The family wishes to express their gratitude beyond words for the comfort provided by the many caregivers throughout her illness, especially the angels who work for LightHouse Hospice of Georgetown. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Alzheimers Association. Donations can be made by phone at 1.800.272.3900 or via Merle’s personal Alzheimers Association tribute site.
