Michael William Vaughan, age 62, died at the Summit at Westlake Hills, Austin, TX on August 8, 2009 after a 10-month battle with colon cancer. Born October 1, 1946 in Toledo, Ohio, he grew up in Troy, Michigan. From a very young age, he showed exceptional athletic talent. The possessor of a 90 mph fastball in his teens, he attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor on a baseball scholarship. He enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War but curiously, ended up stationed in Morocco. The reason - the base commander there had requested a good pitcher for his baseball team. After earning a Master's Degree in Education at the University of Arizona, he worked in the medical device industry for over 30 years. A position with Intermedics Orthopedics brought him to Austin in 1992. Switching careers as he approached retirement, he was happily employed by Averitt Express in his last days. An acute observer of the political landscape, he wrote frequent letters to the editor of various newspapers, using his impressive vocabulary to communicate his thoughts. A slightly solitary soul, nevertheless, he will be missed by many. Predeceased by parents Bill and Marian Vaughan, Tucson, Arizona. Survived by daughters, Lily Claire Vaughan, Austin, TX, Kirsten Vaughan, St. Louis, MO, Dr. Kelley Molitor, DVM, St. Louis, MO, and Lauren Holste, St. Louis, MO, and son, Chad Lindow of Arkansas. Thanks to all who offered their prayers, kind wishes and words of encouragement to Mike during his illness. Services to be announced at a later date. Donations may be made to your local Little League.
