

Myra Mollie West Hartwig died Monday, August 22nd. She was born in Evangeline, Louisiana on the 18th of April 1918. After being raised in Cedar Bayou, Texas, Mollie relocated to Austin in 1958. She had a career in banking, first with Texas State Bank and later with University Federal Credit Union, where she served as General Manager from 1963 to 1967. While at Texas State Bank she was very active with The American Institute of Banking and served on the National Committee for women’s banking. She was also active in the professional organization for credit unions during her tenure with University Federal Credit Union.
Both Mollie and her late husband, Dr. William H. Hartwig, devoted many years to mentoring students at the University of Texas and the family expresses gratitude to the many who continued as friends until her death.
Mollie was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon. In addition, she was also a member of PEO-Chapter R and very active in the Municipal Art Guild.
Mollie was preceded in death by her husband William H. Hartwig, daughter Joanna Lawrence, son Charles Kilgore, parents Howard and Ollie West and four brothers: Blonnie, Willard, Lawrence and Coy.
Survivors include Mollie’s daughter Barbara Jones, sons Geoffrey and David Hartwig all of Texas, daughter-in-law Judy Colyn of Tennessee; grandchildren, Alicia Hoffman, Ann Williams, Ray Patterson, Myra Addy, Jennifer Biewster, Tina Bohannan, Troy Stahlhaber, Tiffani Hatcher, Lisbeth Anjo, Andy Martinez, Valerie Cabrera, and Jonathan Hartwig. Mollie was also survived by 23 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family has established a scholarship fund in Mollie’s memory. The Mollie Hartwig Spirit Award will assist women in furthering their educational goals. Mollie was the epitome of Southern hospitality while expressing an independent spirit, encouraging all women to strive to be their best. Donations may be sent to:

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening, on Wednesday, the 24th of August at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd, Austin, Texas.
Funeral Services will be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon, Thursday, the 25th of August at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Austin Memorial Park.
