Mona Rogers Burchette

Her early years were spent in Ranger and Dallas, Texas where she graduated from Highland Park High School.

Following her graduation from Baylor University with a degree in Home Economics, Mona was married to her husband of 57 years, C. Ray Burchette, Jr. During their marriage Ray pastored a number of churches in Texas. His longest tenure was twenty-five years (1965-1990) as Senior Pastor of Highland Park Baptist Church in Austin, TX. As a pastor's wife she created a home that was always welcoming and creative. One of her joys was cooking and she took pleasure in experimenting with different spices and herbs. She delighted in teasing friends by refusing to share some of her "secret ingredients."

Mona found joy in many events and activities but without a doubt, the joy of her life was the birth of their son, Matthew Rogers Burchette. Following Ray's retirement as Director of the Baylor Alumni Association in Waco, TX they moved from Texas to Denver, CO where Matthew and his wife, Julie, live. Matthew and Julie have been a great source of comfort and joy to Mona, particularly during her illness.

It could be said that Mona never saw an art museum she didn't like. Whenever possible, she and Ray spent time studying numerous artists, particularly southwestern artists. During the years they made frequent trips to Santa Fe, NM and became very knowledgeable about the Navaho culture. No matter where it was, their home continued to reflect their interest and good taste.

Mona's family and friends will greatly miss her bright smile, her sense of fun, and teasing humor.

A private burial service will be held at Austin Memorial Park. A memorial service and reception will be held at Highland Park Baptist Church, 5206 Balcones Drive, on Saturday, January 31, at 3 p.m. Reverend Cheryl Kimble, senior pastor, will officiate.
