Nancy is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Nancy lived a full and busy life. As a very young girl in Chicago, she helped her parents run their neighborhood store where she learned to serve customers and make change before she was old enough to start school. Her family later moved to Oregon where they owned an almond orchard. By the time she was in junior high, the family settled in Austin where Nancy attended Fulmore Junior High and Travis High School where she and Gary met and dated throughout their years there. Gary played football and Nancy was a member of the drill team, the Travis Rebelettes. Following graduation, Nancy and Gary were married on October 6, 1956 and raised seven children.
Prior to starting their family, Nancy worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell. After the birth of their first child, she stayed home to care for their growing family while also supporting Gary through his service in the United States Naval Reserve, his training with the Austin Fire Department, and his apprenticeship to earn his master plumber license.
From 1964-2008, Nancy and Gary owned and operated Schriber Plumbing & Heating Co. While Gary installed and/or serviced plumbing in hundreds of homes and businesses in the growing Austin area, Nancy continued her support by taking care of the day to day responsibilities of running the business. She was a master of multi-tasking and spent her days answering phone calls, figuring bids, or managing payroll…all while simultaneously caring for her children and their home.
Nancy’s faith was the foundation of her life and she and Gary were long time members of Congress Avenue Baptist Church. They raised their family there while serving as active members of the church community. Later in life, they both became active members of Hyde Park Baptist Church.
Nancy took great pride in her civic responsibilities and was a regular participant in the local political process. She participated in her neighborhood association, served as a poll watcher during elections, volunteered for numerous political candidates, served the Travis County Republican Party, participated as a delegate at Republican National Conventions, and even became a candidate herself in a race or two.
While her community service and business were very important to her, Nancy’s pride and joy was her family. She was determined to afford them as many opportunities as possible to experience new things and participate in activities that interested them. She believed in keeping her children active, and throughout the years, Nancy spent hours in the car shuttling them to music lessons, swim team practice, scouts, dance recitals, and endless sporting events. She waited patiently in the car, always with a good book in hand, until it was time to drive to the next event.
Time together as a family was always precious to Nancy. She and Gary worked hard to assure the family went on vacations each year to allow the children to see and experience new places. In addition, since 1977, she and Gary have hosted an annual trip for the entire family to Padre Island where she loved to play games and cook amazing meals while watching her family fish, swim, and eat watermelon and smores on the beach.
Nancy led by example and strove to teach all of her children and grandchildren the importance of being well rounded, independent, hard working members of society who also know how to have a good time. She was a huge success and will be greatly missed.
