Before the sun rose Wednesday morning, Nancy Slagle went to heaven and God gained another angel to watch over her family. Nancy was born September 30th, 1935 and returned home March 21st, 2012 after a long illness. Originally from Syracuse, New York, Nancy at the age of 18 joined the Military where she met and married Kenneth P. Slagle, Jr. She lived for the next 50 years in Austin, Texas.
Nancy was a fantastic person to know and love. After retiring from Capital City Steel, she went on to open her own daycare to make it affordable for parents to work and provide excellent care. Until the age of 70 years old she ran her daycare which included many of her grandkids and great-grandkids attending it.
She loved the springtime so that she could work in her gardens and sit back and drink her tea on the back porch during the summer months. She also loved to quilt and did so by hand and was always sewing for herself and grandkids.
Along with her husband of 57 years, Nancy raised five children and a grandson. Her love of animals was boundless and could be seen by many strays that she would help take care of.
Nancy’s house was open to everyone and she always greeted a new person with “come sit down – can I get you a cup of coffee.”
Nancy is survived by Kenneth P. Slagle, husband of 57 years; children, Sue Slagle (Pina), Cheryl Grubbs and husband, Rusty, Marie Dunkle, Kenneth “Paul” Slagle III and Richard Slagle and wife, Amy; grandchildren, Jason Slagle and wife, Jamie, Juaquin Pina, Cheyenne Sanchez, Megan Pina, Perla Pina, Sabrina Dunkle, Joshua Dunkle, Micah Dunkle, Danni Dunkle, Danaya Grubbs, Nicole Whittingham, Justin Slagle, Robin Slagle, Zachory Doer and Samantha Doer; and 21 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, March 23, 2012 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 24, 2012 in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Weaver of New Hope Church officiating. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in honor of Nancy to the Animal Trustees of Austin at 5129 Cameron Road, Austin, Texas 78723.
