Neva Nell Prewitt, born Neva Nell Crain on March 26, 1928, in Red River County, Texas, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025, at the age of 97. A beacon of kindness, love, and generosity, Neva lived a life full of purpose, joy, and devotion to her family and community.
Neva was the beloved wife of Leonard Prewitt, who preceded her in death in 1980. She is survived by her adult children, Patti Rossman, Rick Prewitt (and wife Karen), and Terri Luttrell (and husband David). Neva was a devoted and enthusiastic mother, always present and supportive, whether cheering from the stands as a band mom, working the concession stand as a sports booster, or proudly supporting dance performances. Her energy and encouragement left a lasting mark not only on her children but on countless other young lives she touched along the way.
In her younger years, Neva attended Paris Junior College, where she proudly played women’s basketball back when the game was played half-court. At just 5'4", she was scrappy and enjoyed the court. When she transferred to East Texas State University to complete her bachelor’s degree in education and music, she quickly realized that the basketball team there came with a new challenge—the players were much taller! With a smile and no regrets, she decided it was time to hang up her court shoes. Never one to stop learning, Neva later earned her master’s degree in library science from the University of Texas, blending her love of knowledge and service into a meaningful advanced degree.
Neva treasured her role as grandmother to Britt Luttrell, Andrew Rossman, Blake Luttrell, Paula Lorenzo, and Matt Jensen, and great-grandmother to Conner Jensen, Brinlee Jensen, and, most recently, Isabella Lorenzo. One of her greatest joys was hosting “Gammy Camp,” where laughter, love, and memories were abundant. She never missed a chance to attend their games, recitals, or school events, always beaming with pride. Gammy cookies will be discussed until the end of time.
Neva also had a deep commitment to serving others. For over 30 years, she volunteered with the Seton Medical Center Auxiliary, offering her time and heart to help those in need. Her hobbies reflected her vibrant spirit—she loved sewing, curling up with a good book, and passionately following her favorite teams, especially the NBA and her Texas Longhorns.
Her green thumb was well known—Neva found peace and joy in tending to her yard and nurturing her flowers, creating a little patch of beauty for all to enjoy.
Neva’s warmth, wit, and unwavering kindness made her a treasured friend to many. She leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and joy that will live on through her family and all those fortunate enough to have known her.
A celebration of Neva’s remarkable life will be held on June 28 at 1:00 p.m. at Cook Walden, located at 6300 William Cannon Dr. in Austin. Friends and family are invited to share stories, laughter, and love as we come together in her honor.
