Norma was born in San Saba, Texas on September 30, 1943, the only child of William Franklin Hanks and Helen Beatrice Cooksey Hanks. She grew up in Mart, Texas and attended Mart Elementary through high school. She excelled in playing the piano and organ as well as the clarinet. As a 6th grade student, she was one of only two elementary students who played on the Mart High School marching band, which played at the Cotton Bowl.
Norma attended Baylor University and completed her nursing degree at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas, following in the footsteps of her mother, two paternal aunts and a cousin who also graduated from the same program. It was at Scott & White where she met her future husband, Alex.
She started her professional career as a Registered Nurse at The Cleveland Clinic, working on the GI Service, while Alex was doing his residency in Neurology there. They were married on June 1, 1968 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, in Cleveland, Ohio.
In August, 1972, tired of the blistering winters, Norma and Alex moved back to Texas settling in Corpus Christi with two toddlers in tow, Jeff and Greg. Norma was frequently seen chauffeuring her children to school as well as to tennis practices and tournaments, in her van. After the children "flew the nest" (the last one being Melissa, who followed in her Mother's footsteps to Baylor), Norma started volunteering at Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial, which she truly enjoyed. She loved traveling to San Antonio and Austin to visit the kids and grandkids, often watching them play sports, especially Ryan and Carter who excel in baseball, Cristian in basketball, and Madison, a budding tennis player. She also enjoyed traveling, playing the piano, tennis, snow skiing, and bingo.
Norma is survived by her loving husband of almost 48 years, Alex, of Corpus Christi, Texas; son, Jeff and his wife Melissa and their two sons, Ryan and Carter of Austin, Texas; son, Greg and his son, Cristian; son, Kevin and his daughter Madison; and daughter, Melissa, all of San Antonio, Texas; as well as her "big brother" Herschel Wells of Dallas, Texas.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, William F. Hanks and Bea Cooksey Hanks.
Visitation will be held at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church in Corpus Christi, TX on Friday, May 6, 2016 from 9:30 to 10:30 am followed by a Rosary from 10:30 to 11 am. Funeral Mass will follow at 11 am. Interment will be at the Mart Cemetery, in Mart, Texas at 1pm on Saturday, May 7, 2016.
