
Norman Walter Holmes, Jr., 67, of Austin, Texas passed away March 4, 2012 in Austin. Norman was born August 14, 1944 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Norman W. and Wilma Holmes. He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church, Milwaukee on June 27, 1945 and was confirmed on May 25, 1958 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Milwaukee.
Norman served his country in the Army from September 1967 to September 1970, serving in Vietnam. Upon discharge from the service, he returned to Milwaukee and enrolled in the Library School at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His first professional librarian position was as Patient Librarian at the VA Hospital, Danville, Illinois. He left that position to work on his Master of Business Administration degree which he earned from Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Illinois in 1981.
His degrees included a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education (1968) and a Master of Arts-Library Science (1974), both from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the MBA from Eastern Illinois University (1981) and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1988).
In October 1991 he joined the faculty of Concordia Lutheran College (now Concordia University) as Director of Library Services, a position he held until May, 2010. He also taught in the College of Business.
Norman was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Austin, Texas from 1991 until his death serving in a number of capacities including organist, choir director, Sunday School teacher and treasurer. He enjoyed working on pipe organs and was a member of the American Guild of Organists and the Organ Historical Society.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 7th of March 2012, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1207 West 45th Street, Austin, Texas with Rev. Paul R. Harris officiating. Visitation with the family will be held from one o’clock until two o’clock in the afternoon at Trinity Lutheran Church under the direction of Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas.
Interment will be held at Wisconsin Memorial Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin at a later date.
