Olive Ann Gilbert

Olive Ann Gilbert, age 90, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2020 at her home at Brookdale of Westlake Hills in Austin, Texas. She was born February 3, 1930 in Wheaton, Illinois. Her parents were Robert Connolly and Mary Edinger of Wheaton, Illinois.

Olive is survived by her sons, Michael Lee (wife Christine Ann Garvey) and Robert Bruce (wife Lizan Nichole), as well as her grandchildren John, Kathryn, Patrick, Benjamin, Hope, Olivia and Graham.

After attending Wheaton High School and then North Central College, she graduated with a B.S. Degree in Mathematics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1952. On June 7, 1952 she married Bruce William Gilbert of Mattoon, Illinois. They were married for 65 years until Bruce passed away in 2018.

Olive taught math for five years in junior high school before having children. She returned to work as a science teacher in junior high school for several years before embarking on a 26-year career as a payroll clerk for the Hoerner Waldorf (now Stone Container) box factory in Aurora, Illinois. Her hobbies included square dancing, scrabble (she rarely lost), puzzles and gardening. She swam a mile two times a week for decades at the Maplebrook I swimming pool in the summer and the Naperville YMCA in the winter.

A Memorial Visitation and Celebration of Olive’s life will be held at a time and date to be determined once the pandemic has passed at the Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, Illinois. A private family inurnment will follow at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
