

He attended school in Round Rock where he spent most of his childhood, growing up on Brushy Creek.
Preston left the farm when he was 16 years old and soon after married the love of his life Elizabeth Cowan whom he had been dating for three months.
One of his first jobs was digging ditches at Ft. Hood. Having no vehicle of his own, Preston would hitchhike to work each day. He later worked for Superior Dairies earning $25.00 per week for a few years. Preston then went to work at Bob Fowler’s Service Station in Austin. One of his favorite jobs was driving a truck for Grandma’s Cookie Company.
Preston and Elizabeth built their first home in Four Points. They remained there until moving to Oregon in 1955.
While in Oregon, Preston and his family worked in the orchards picking cherries, cantaloupes, and hauling hay. After buying Uncle Kermit’s truck the family moved back to Four Points where they lived in a mobile home at Grandma Cowan’s. Preston began working for Shorty Borders as an iron worker with his son, James Henry.
In the early 60’s Preston, Elizabeth and their baby girl Wendy moved to Midland, MI working as a Mobile Home salesman for Jack Harvey. Some years later the family returned to Austin where Preston continued working in mobile home sales for his brother in law Kermit Cowan of K & R Mobile Home Sales.
Preston was an outstanding salesman possessing a gift that allowed him to sell anything to anyone. This proved profitable when they moved to Rockport and he began to buy and sell real estate in 1977. Their next move was to Bastrop where they built a home and started Bastrop Storage which they operated for 14 years.
After celebrating 50 golden years of marriage they sold their business and retired to Kingsland. His beloved Liz passed away in 1999.
Preston is predeceased by his parents, two sisters, three brothers, and one great-great-grandchild.
Preston is survived by his two daughters, Quita Routson and husband Ted of Huntsville, TX and Wendy Kirschner and husband Bill of Junction, TX; one son, Jim DeGroat of Kingsland, TX; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2011 in the Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. Graveside services will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Bastrop.
