

Richard Walter Chambers, Sgt. 1st Class, passed away on October 23, 2006. He was born August 15, 1925 in Augusta, Georgia. Richard entered the U.S. Marine Corps on December 18, 1945. He fought in the battle of Iwo Jima, 3rd Marine Division, and later served in the Korean War. He retired from military service on March 1, 1966 with the following honors: Asiatic Pacific Ribbon One Battle Star, Korean Service Medal Five Battle Stars and numerous other decorations. Richard graduated Austin Community College with an Associates Arts degree and worked for the Veterans Administration Austin Data Processing Center 1967-1984. He was a member of the Army Masonic Lodge No. 1105, A.F. & A.M. He is survived by his loving wife, Margie Chambers; step-daughter, Cassandra Gleason; step-son, Derral Gleason, all of Austin; sisters, Gertrude Stibeck and Charlotte Shamblin; brothers, Bernard and Robert Chambers; cousins, Winthrop Chambers, Mary Ann Richards, Beau and Walter Price, all of Georgia; and sister-in-law, Joycelynn and husband Earl Jansen of Austin. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 29th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 30, 2006 in the Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel followed by burial at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Dr. Richard was a good soldier, husband, step-father and brother.
